AUCKLAND RACES. {Per Press Agency .) Auckland, May 27. The weather was very fine for the races today. For the St Lcger, Ariel and Isaac Walton started, which promised a good race, when Isaac Walton bolted, and Ariel won at leisure. Birthday Handicap, of 100 sovs, added to a sweepstake of sovs; distance, one mile and three quarters. Mr Walter’s Parawbenua. 6 yre, Bst 12 b 1 i he Don, aged, Bst 101 b ... ... ... 2 Mr Young’s Bedouin, 5 yrs, 7st 31b ... 3 Mr Buckland’s Ariel, 3 yrs, Bst 121 b ... 0 Mr Walter’s Isaac Walton, 3 yrs, 7st 71b 0 Mr McGee’s Perfume, 5 yrs, Bst 6:b ... 0 Mr Jackson’s Folly, 7st 121 b 0 A good start was effected, the Don going off with the lead, all the rest close together After going half a mile Ariel slipped up in a dip and fell, but his jockey was unhurt. The Don kept the lead past the grar d s'and, the others all close together. Isaac Walton repeated his bolt, the other four went (n in close order on the far side. Bedouin anddei ly fell away, and Don went off, still leading by a trifle, with Perfume and Para-, whenua in close attendance. As they entered the straight Don came down with a rush,
and Don and Parawhenua went up the straight together, the latter winning by two lengths/ Don second, Bedouin third, both whipping hard. Champagne Stakes of 50 sovs ; added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs, Distance, six furlongs, Mr Walmsley’s Aerolite, Bst 101 b ... 1 Mr Watts’ colt by Totara, Bst 101 b ... 2 Mr McGee’s Lady Yavasani, Bst 0 Mi Buckland’s Aconite, Bst 0 Betting—Even on the colt Totara, The lot were despatched to an excellent start. To the surprise of every one the favorite fell behind from the first, and lost so much ground in the first quarter of a mile that he was really out of the race. Meanwhile Aerolite and Aconite went on with a lend close together. When they rounded the turn Major Walmsley’s horse came away from his companion, and entered the straight with a lead of two lengths. This he increased up the straight, and won hard held, amid loud cheers by four lengths, Mr Watt’s colt made up a lot of his lost ground in the last 200 yards, and finished second. Handicap Hurdle Race, of 40 sovs, added to a sweep of 3 sovs; distance two miles; over eight hurdles. Mr McGee’s May Moon, 9st 111 b 1 Mr Trimble’s Black Monitor, 10st ... 2 Mr Trevanoo’s Waitara, lOst 3 Mr Hill’s Gladstone, list 0 Mr Bobbet’s The Arrow, lOst 61b ... 0 Mr Buckland’s Mystery, lOst 41b 0 At the start Waitara and Gladstone led, with the others widely spread. Past the stand Gladstone and Black Monitor were racing for the lead, May Moon and Mystery next, Waitara, who had missed the first hurdle, last. Black Monitor went on with a lead directly after passing the post, and May Moon, who was pulling Hurston half out of his saddle, went up. The second time round May Moon challenged the leader on the far side, and the struggle became interesting. Coming into the straight May Moon, though she stumbled at the last hurdle but one, took the lead, and won by two lengths easily.
