Melbourne, May 25

A large fire occurred at Messrs Harper and Company's Mills, Flinders street, Melbourne, to-day. The mills and bonded scores adjoining were destroyed. The damage done amounts to £IOO,OOO. The Wellington and Dunedin firemen performed creditably at Ballarat. The banquet in the evening was very disorderly. Melbourne, May 26. The Wellington representatives took third prize at the Ballarat competition. Another large fire has occurred at Messrs Sanders and Lazarus, in Elzabeth street. The premises were completely gutted, and the loss is heavy.

A rich piece of country has been discovered west of Port Morseby, New Guinea. It is thickly populated and has one town laid out in streets, with flower gardens, and every indication of intelligence, industry, and cleanliness.

The Governor has written to Sir G Grey empowering him to use the name of the Qaeen in instituting legal proceedings relative to the land purchases by Mr Thomaß Russell, at the Upper Thames, within the bcundaries over which the pre-emptive rights of the Crown have been exercised.

The first match in the chess tournament was played between Auckland and Danedin by telegraph last night. One game terminated in favour of Auckland, one was drawn, and in the majority of the other games Auckland holds much the strongest position. Alexandra, May 25.

A despatch from the Agent-General, received to-day, reports that the conditions upon which suitable emigrants for Jackson's Bay Settlement will be taken, have been distributed. Messrs Holloway and Booth have been furnished with them, and they have also been translated into German, with a view of getting a party of Pomeranians, who, the Superintendent of Westland stated, would, with their families, be sufficient at first. The mission to the Continent has broken down, owing to the death of the New Zealand agent, Mr Mathiaa. Dr Welch, late of New Zealand, has stated his intention to make up a party for Jackson's Bay. He has since been in communication with the Superintendent, but the result is noc known in London. The list of nominations from Westland for Shetlanders has been sent to them. At present no reply has been received. Three hundred immigrants, including ninety per Camperdown, have been sent to Westland since May Ist, 1875. The Camperdown sailed for Nelson on April 12th. The tender of the Telegraph Construction Maintenance Company has been accepted for the second Cook's Straits cable. The February mails, via San Francisco, were delivered in London on March 29th. It is understood that the Government will apply during the ensuing session for power to appoint a commission to value the Canterbury runs, with the view of offering them to the present leaseholders on such terms as the commission may recommend. The City of Dunedin sailed for Lyttelton from London on March 25th, with 276 sou's.
