The Euterpe discharged a portion of her railway iron for Timaru yesterday, and took in some wheat. The Countess of Kintore was busy discharging railway iron yesterday. The Uuiou Company's favorite steamer Maori, Captain Malcolm, master, arrived in l.yttelton on 24th inst, at 6.30 p.m., from Dunedin via the Bluff, West Coast, and Nelson. She left fort Chalmers at 2.30 p.m. on 4th inst with a fresli breeze from south-east and thick foggy weather, and arrived at the Bluff at 10.2'J a.m next morning ; after waiting for weather to moderate, left at 7.30 a.m on 6ih with a light north-east wind, and arrived in Milford Sound at 8 a.m on 7th; left again at 12.45 p.m, and arrived in Martin's Bay at 3 p.m; lowered the boat and put passengers, mails, stores, &c, into it, and pulled for the shore, but on crossing the bar found the river was running too hard to be able to pull against the stream, so returned to the steamer, and then went round to Big Bay, and anchored at 6 p.m for the night; next morning, at 6.30 a.m, sent the boat ashore with passengers, stores, &c. for the miners living there, and then returned to Martin's Bay, and landed everything for there successfully, and at 10.30 am left for Jackson's Bay, arriving at 3.30 pm: left again at 616 p.m, and arrived off Hokitika at 8 a.m on 9th, and crossed the bar at 9.30 a.m; discharged 30 tons cargo, and left on the same tide at 12.15 p.m for Westport, and arrived off bar at 7.30Jp.m; crossed at 8.:<0 p.m, and moored to wharf at 9 p.m; after discharging 45 tons cargo, leit for Greymouth at 12.30 p.m on 10th, and arrived off the bar at 5 30 p.m; at 11.30 p.m the p.s Dispatch came out and towed her saiely in ovr-r the t>ar, and there she remained for twelve days in consequence of the heavy freshes in the river and strong westerly winds, causing the bar to be too rough to attempt crossing. On Sunday, the 21st, a change took place in trie weather, and at 8.35 a,mon 22nd left the wharf in tow of Dispatch, and crossed over the bar through the north channel, casting the tow rope adriit Ht 9.50 a.m, and left for 'Nelson with light easterly weather; rounded Farewell Spit light at 2 30 a.m, and arrived in Nelson at Bam 23rd; left again at 9 a.m, and went through French Pass at 12.30 p.m; passed Cape Campbell at 9 p.m vrith a fresh south-east breeze, which shifted during the night to south-west, and blew hard, accompanied with heavy rain, which continued until arrival as above. We thank Mr R. C. Mathias for report. The Maori sailed tor Timaru yesterday at 5 p.m. She loads a cargo of grain for the s.s Alhambra there, which she tranships at Fort Chalmers.
The Government are getting two steamers built in England to replace the Luna. One is intended to do the rough work of attending lighthouses*, carrying telegraph postß, &c, in which Captain Fairchild does good service when not required for more important State ceremonies. The second steamer is intended merely for G übernatorial and Ministerial uses, while she will also, it is presumed, be available ; for taking some of the members occasionally to the Assembly. It is said that this latter vessel is being fitted up exactly in the style of the Royal yacht, and that an oflicer of the Royal Navy will be obtained to command her.—" Grey River Argus," May 22nd. The; splendid s.b Taupo, Captaiu Worsp, arrived in harbor at 7.30 a.m yesterday morning, and wa6 moored at the Gladstone pier. Reports leaving Bart Chalmers at 1.30 p.m on Wednesday, and had fine Bouth-westerly weather throughout the trip. She sailed north at 4.30 p.m, after having discharged 30 and loaded 40 tons cargo and 211 sheep, which will be transhipped at Manakaufor the Chatham Islands.
