BOROUGH COUNCIL.

LYTTELTON. Monday, May 22. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Ors McDonald, Parsons, H. Allwright, P. Cunningham, and W. Giaham. The clerk stated he had received £93 17s 4d since last meeting. Correspondence was read— From Mr Wynn Williams, requesting the Mayor to lay correspondence re alleged trespass on Joseph Illingworth's section before the Council. From Mr P. A. Phillips, town clerk of Auckland, enclosing copy of suggestions for amendments in the Municipal Corporations and Public Health Acts at the next of Parliament, requesting the Lyttelton Borough Council's co operation and support, by adoroaning the Colonial Secretary to that effect. From Wra Austin, T. Merson, Wm Young, and thirty-one other ratepayers, requesting the Mayor to call a public meeting for the purpose of hearing the opinions of the candidates for municipal honors at the ensuing election.

Or F. Graham, requesting leave of absence for two months, in consequence of ill-health.

From Messrs Ratcliffe and Field, requesting permission to lease section of land at corner of London and Oxford streets.

The Mayor asked if Mr Fitzgerald had been in possession of this section for three months.

The town clerk said he would be in occupation three months on May 29th. It was resolved that the Borough solicitor should be spoken to on the subject. It was determined that Messrs Ratcliffe and Field be written to, informing them that an offer for the section has already been accepted. From Messrs Warne and others, residents in Donald street and the neighbourhood, requesting the Council to take steps to abate the nuisance from the Victoria dining rooms, and also calling attention to the imperfect thoroughfare of Donald street. The foreman of works stated that the nuisance complained of waß from a urinal at the back of the Victoria dining rooms, and that the bad state of the footpath was, to a great extent, owing to the excavations made by Mr Warne on his section there. The matter was left in the hands of th< foreman of works, to report next week. With reference to the letter from the town clerk of Auckland, the Mayor said that it would be better to appoint a sub-committee to consider the matter and report at some future time. , __ Cr Cunningham moved—" That the Mayor and Cr Allwright, with the assistanc e t ithe

Borough Solicitor, be appointed a subcomraittee to consider the matter, and that Mr Phillip*' letter be acknowledged, informing him the matter was under consideration."

Seconded by Cr McDonald, and carried

With regard to the request from certain ratepayers that a public meeting should be held in older that they migbfc hear the view? of the candidates lo<- th<i forthcoming eieition for councillor in place of Cr Buist resigned, the Mayor stated that he should propose its being held on Friday next, 26th instaut. at 8 p.m. On the motion of the Mayor, Cr F. Graham was granted leave of absence for two months. The list of unpaid rates for 1875 was laid on the table.

Cr Cunningham moved—" That the list, with names of freeholders attached, after supervision by the Mayor, be handed to the borough solicitor for immediate collection." Seconded by Cr Parsons, and carried. Accounts were passed amounting to £lO Is. L>ave was granted to Dr McDonald to erect a horse post in Oxford street. After a long discussion in reference to the Lyttelton water supply, the Council adjourned.
