ROAD BOARDS.
MANDBVILLB AND RA.NGIOP.Ai A special meeting of this Board was held on Friday afternoon, at which Messrs Joan C. Boys (the chairman), Blackett, Hinge, and Parsons were present. The meeting having been convened to arrange for the election of a member of the Board vice Mr W. Bramley, decea ed, the clerk was directed to have a public meeting convened for Monday, June 6th, to supply the vacancy. The members expressed their wisn to condole with Mrs Bramley in her severe bereavement ; also, their own regret at the loss of do active, attentive, and valuable a member as Mr Bramley had been. A letter embodying the foregoing was signed, and ordered to be transmitted to her. A piece of road, near Kelcher’s, reported as reqairb g to be formed, was ordered to be attended to, and it was agreed to vote £?0 towards shingling Lee’s road, if the parties interested would contribute the remainder of the estimated cost of doing the worst part. A considerable discussion ensued respecting the amount of gorse which is allowed to overhang the roads in some parts of the district and the surveyor was directed to issue the requisite notices where they were a public inconvenience, The Board then adjourned. OUST, A special meeting of ratepayers was held at the Read Board office on Wednesday, the 17th inst. Mr R. L. Higgins, chairman of the Board, presided. The chairman explained the object of the meeting, and then asked some one to propose a resolution. After considerable discussion, Mr W. Morrison proposed—“ That in the opinion of this meeting it is not necessary to change the Road Board office from the present, site.” Seconded by Mr Gardner. Mr Howsoa said he wished to propose the following amendment “That the laborer employed by the Boad Board be stationed near the pound, and take charge of it ; also that the Road Board office remain where it is at present.” Se conded by Mr Atkinson. Mr Roberts said he would propose an amendment on the last amendment —“That in the opinion of this meeting the Boad Board premises should be all together, and be removed to a site near the pound ; that the man employed by the Board take care of the pound, and if necessary the present site be sold.” On a show of hands being taken, Mr Howson’s amendment was carried. The chairman stated that the business for which the meeting was called for was over, but if any of the rateEayera had anything to say, that they might ave their say now that they were together. Mr Howson said that he would like to hear the opinion of the ratepayers on making a road to the Ashley, as he had hear 1 a great deal of talk about it. Mr Atkinson sai I that he thought the road was not required at present. He would therefore move the following resolution :—ln the opinion of this meeting the road that has been tendered for leading to the Ashley is not required.” Seconded by Mr Thompson. Mr Howson proposed an amendment —“ That the question of the carrying out of the work be left to the discretion of the Board,” On a show of hands the resolution was can iod. The meeting then adjourned.
