CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, May 22, The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held at the Corporation Offices yesterday afternoon. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs Ick, Schmidt, Thompson, Turner, Hawkes, Jones, and Gapes. The town clerk reported that the over draft at the bank was £2535 6s lid. The rates collected for the fortnight amounted to £925 lls 4d : bills to be paid, £1899 15s sd; credit to Drainage Loan account, £14,804 15s 51; do, drainage rate acccouut, £IBO6 10s lOd, The city surveyor reported—“lst. In compliance with the Council’s desire, I have examined Horatio street, and I find that it is about 12£ chains long and 33ft wide. As the road is made over a peat bog it will require more than ordinary forming to make it at all serviceable. The expenses will be as follow —Fascines. £144 ; clay, £ls ; forming, £ls; shingle, £52; total, £224. 2nd. With reference to Lyttelton street, I find that it is only 20It wide, and I am therefore uncertain what to do with so narrow a space. The whole width might be thrown into roadwav and a small channel left on each side along the fences ; or the road might be made lower in the centre, and a paved channel along the middle of the road. 3rd. There are now about 5000 cubic yards of broken metal spread on the streets, and about 500 yards in depot ; the remainder is also being delivered 4th. About 3000 cubic yards of shingle have been spread on the streets, ai d we have about 2000 yards in depot, and the remainder is being delivered, O. Walkden, Cby Surveyor.” The report was agreed to. On the motion of Cr Ick, it was resolved that a small footpath should be constructed between the new Hereford street bridge and the old bridge belonging to the mill. The Mayor stated that the total cost of the outfall drain, &c, would be £19,214. The estimate was laid on the table, and the Mayor and the town clerk were authorised to hand over the deeds to the Drainage Board.

A letter was read from Mr John Macdonald (city weighbridge), asking the Council to relieve him from further loss, as other weighbridges reduced the amount of weighing done at the city weigh! ridge. It was resolved not to grant the application.

The finance committee’s report was read. It stated that the sum of £1489 (rates) was still in a’rear, and the committee recommended the Council to issue a notice, and take legal proceedings, unless the rates were paid within fourteen days. The report was approved and adopted. A letter was read from the town clerk of Dunedin, forwarding a copy of the proposed Dunedin Municipal Act, 1876, and asking the Council to furnish their views on the subject of making the Bill generally applicable to the larger municipalities of the colony. Referred to the byc-laws committee.

A letter was read from Messrs James Mcßwen and Co, Melbourne, tendering to deliver road rollers, for the Christchurch Corporation at £790 and £957 for a 15 ton and and a 20 ton roller respectively. Referred to the works committee.

A letter was read from Messrs Montgomery and Co, asking permission to erect scaffolding on the footpath. Referred to the works committee.

Cr Jones said he had been requested by the committee of the Fire Brigade to invite the Councillors and their wives and families to be present at eight o’clock on Wednesday evening, on the occasion of laying the foundation stone of the new Fire Brigade building-

A letter was read from the town clerk, Auckland, enclosing copy of amendments suggested in the Municipal Corporations and Public Health Acts, and requesting the Council's co-operation and support. Referred to the bye-laws committee.

A letter was read from Mr Jabtz Heaseman, hoping that the Council would ra»ke the concrete channelling in Manchester street at as low a level as possible, so as to relieve Eaton place. A letter was read from Mr W. Hargicaves, asking on what terms the Council would extend the concrete pavement to (he full width of the pavement. Referred to the works commiitec.

A letter was read from Mr E J. Lee, stating that he had advertised Courts of Revision for the electoral rolls at the City Council Chambers, and asking for the usual permission for acce r s to the room and papers. Permission granted. A letter was read from the clerk to the Heathcote Road Board, requesting the Council to join the Board in forming and shingling the east side of the East Town belt. A letter was read from Edwards, Bennett, and 00, asking the Council to make good the footpath in front of their premises.

Referred to works committee. The inspector’s report was read and agreed to. The Council then resolved itself into the Local Board of Health.
