AMUSEMENTS.
THE OPERA COMPANY. In consequence of being unable to get away to Wellington as early as expected this company was enabled to give another entertainment at the Theatre last evening. The piece selected was " La Perichole," a miserable burletta by Offenbach. We are sorry that the management have been compelled, by the poverty of their repertoire to fall back upon such a wretched abortion as "La Perichole," which we are justified in saying would be hissed off the stage of the nnclassic " Pavilion" in Whitecbapel, or the " Elephant" in Newington. With the exception of an aria in the first aot, tolerably well rendered by Madame Simunsen, there was not a single pleasing solo in the whole performance: Those who were unfortunately present were as indulgent as ig usual in a Christchurch audience, and even the disgusting drunken orgie, represented in the first act, was allowed to pass off without signs of disapprobation. If the company should ever revisit us, we hope they will be able to give us better and newer operas than th( y have favoured us with on this occasion. The public can hardly be expected "to pay double prices to see such trash as "La Perichole" under the dignified name of opera.
