ROAD BOARDS.

AKAROA AND WAINUI. A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday last, the 13th instant, all the members being present. Tender was received from W Sigley for construction of main road diversion Head of Bay, and was rejected, being excessive in amount; Letter was received from Mr J. Cross, complaining of the injury being done to his fence by the loose soil and stone removed during the improvements to the Pigeon Bay road. Mr Black applied for permission to erect a verandah in front of his business premises on the Beach road, Akaroa. Tbe Board declined to accede to Mr Black's request, considering they have no power to grant the right desired. It was resolved—" That in view of the impending changes which will soon be made in this district—viz, the separation of the town of Akaroa from the Wainui district, and it being both necessary and convenient that the Boad Board office for the Wainui district be placed in a central poiition somewhere between Duvauchelle's B»y and Barry's Bay, the Government be requested to place Buch a sum on the estimates for the purchase of a piece cf land in that locality, having frontage on the main road, for the erection of a Road Board office, and for the necessary fencing, and that the chairman be requested to communicate with the Government on this subject as soon as possible." It was ordered that the Government be again applied to relative to the position and construction of the Onuku road, and that the district engineer be requested to complete the survey of tbe Wainui Valley road now that a line has been cleared through the bueh. The sum of £ls 7s 6d was passed for payment on account of labor, and the meeting then adjourned. OUST. The Board held its usual monthly meeting on Monday, the Bth instant, at the Road Board Office, Oust. Present—Messrs Higgins (chairman), Conway, Early Gardener, and Dickensen. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CorresKmdence was read from the Mandeville and angiora Road Board, respecting the work on the Boundary road, and enclosing a cheque for half the cost of same, also stating that they do not see their way to assist in forming the road across the hill to Fernside sheep Station. From C. D. Scott, calling the Board's attention to the drain near bis place. From Hans 8. Kennedy, claiming 12* 6d, being the loss he considered he sustained through the Board reletting a contract he had taken. The claim was considered and disallowed, owing to the contract being let for over a year, and never attending to sign the contract and specifications, nor was there any appearance of the claimant commencing the work. The following petition was next read—" R. L. Higgins, Esq, Chairman Oust Road Board—We, the undersigned, having seen with rpgret the advertisement for selling the Road Board Office, &c, considering that the present site is most convenient for the district, being near railway station and post office, where letters and contracts can be got when the Board meets, We therefore humbly request you, as chairman of Cust Road Board, to call a general meeting of ratepayers in the district on an early day before any change be made in the present office site, and before the Board takes any action in the matter." Signed by W. Morrison and twenty-one others. The clerk was therefore directed to call a special meeting of ratepayers on the 17th instant, to be held at the Board office, at 12 noon. Mr Samuel Sprott waited on the Board with reference to the piece of land to be taken off his section for the road round the hill to Fernside Bheep statiou. As Mr Sprott adhered to his former price of £6O for about an acre of land, the Board declined to give the amount asked for, and offered him £ls, which he refused. Messrs Donaldson and Biohardson waited on the Board with reference to the drain along their sections, and asked the Board to get the drain cut deeper than it is at present, and it was decided that the contractor cut the drain to the depth stated in the specification. Tenders were received for metalling part of Ashley road, reforming boundary road, digging 6000 holes on plantation reserve, back of Atkinson's, and making fords on Ashley road. One tender in each case"was accepted. Also, for cutting hill on Ashley road and forming the road over the hill to Ashley. Both tenders were declined as being considered excessive. Tenders were also opened for Road Board office site and building. That of Mr Scott was accepted on condition that it settled that the Road Board buildings be put on the plantation reserve. The clerk was directed to call for tenders for filling up lagoon on boundary road, and to write to the West Eyreton Boad Board, and ask if they will agree to pay half the cost of the work, also to get culvert lengthened on Tipping's road and main road, and to set the men to do sundry other works. Accounts to the amount of £4O 0s 3d were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned. ASHBUBTON, A meeting of this Board was held at the Boad Board office, Ashburton, on Monday last, the 15th. Members present—Messrs D. Williamson, T. Bullock, and J. Hunt. The chairman being absent, Mr Williamson was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting, held on tbe 2nd instant, were read and confirmed, and the following outward correspondence was next read:— To the Provincial Solicitor re auditing accounts. To the Resident Magistrate re renting offices for the court-house, &c. To the Minister for Public Works re defining roads across the railway reserve, in order to connect the main south road with the Ashburton bridge approaches. To the Registration Officer re list of claims to vote under he Registration Act, 1875. To Mr Thomas 8. Lewis re app ointment as working overseer. To Martin Dunn re cheque of £5 returned. It was decided that the Ashburton and Beach road should be at once put in repair. It was also agreed that Kermode street should be made, between East street and the cemetery roid, and Mr Bruce was instructed to take the necessary levels and prepare a section for the same. The Board then adjourned to Tuesday, the 6th June, at 1 p.m.
