MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, May 13. (Before G. L. Lee, Esq, J.P.) Vagrancy and Assault. —Thos Richards was charged with vagrancy. It was proved that he was always loafing about publichouses, that he assaulted the apprehending constable, and that he generally misconducted himself. Sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Drunk and Disorderly. —An inebriate for this offence was fined 10a Vagrancy. —Peter Swenson for vagrancy was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. His conduct was very similar to that of the other prisoner sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Illegally on Railway Station.- James Davies, charged with being asleep last night, in a railway carriage, was discharged with a. caution. Wife Desertion,— Chas Ahrans, who» ha i been apprehended at Dunedin on this charge, was brought up. Mr O’Neil appea- ed for the defendant, and stated that his client was very ill and wanted to go into the hospital. The sum of £55 had been found upon him, and this might be left in the hands of the Court as bail money. The Court agreed to this course, and the prisoner was remanded until Tuesday. Larceny from a Shop. —James Jones was charged with stealing a coat from the premises of Messrs Candy and Dewsbury. It appeared that the prisoner had taken the coat from a nail outside the shop door, and put it on. Prisoner said he was under the influence of liquor at the time, and did not not know what he was doing. He had offered to pay for the coat. Mr Inspector Bud-lay said prison, r was a chemist and had. not been long in the colony. Sentenced to a months’s imprisonment with hard labour. The Bench remarking that this was a beginning for a colonial career. Assault.— The case of assault by John Saunders against Mrs Robson was with* drawn.
LYTTELTON. Fbiday, May 12. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.) Absent Without Leave— John McDermot, accused of this offence, was ordered on board. Drunkenness.— James Lockyer, arrested by constable Devine, was fined 20s, or in default 48 hours. Using Abusive Language. Hollis was accused by F. B. Manning of this offence. Mr Nalder appeared for defendant. Alter hearing the evidence, the Bench dismissed the case.
