THE TIMARU SPORTS.
We take from the Timaru Herald of yesterday an account of the various events run off at the first day's meeting of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club. The attendance was large, and the various events appear to have been well contested. As will be seen, the quarter was won by Johnston with two other Christchurch amateurs second and third. J. W. Davis also ran second for the Ladies' Cup steeplechase, and Johnstor took second for the Hundred YarJs sprint. The followingjis a description of the various events : 100 Yards Race, Ist Heat. E. H. Martelli 1 F.Johnston 2 J. C. Cook, Macpherson, and Raine also ran. Johnston wag quickest on his feet, and led for the greater part of the distance, but Martelli, who had been pressing him hard, passed him, and won by about two feet, the otherß well up. Time—ll 2-sth sees. 2nd Heat. R. Westenra 1 E. F. Blurdell 2 Watson, Craig, and Paterson, also ran. Westenra and Blundell were the first to show in front, and they were running abreast for the greater pare of the distance. At about 20 yds from the go il, it looked like a dead heat, but Westenra, by a spurt, shot ahead, and won by three quarters of a yard Watson and Craig were well up at the finish, but Paterson had dropped out just previously. Time—ll l-sth sec. High Jump. E. H. Cameron, sft 1 W. H. Craig and B. F. Blundell, who also competed, rose 4ft llin. G. L. Meason and Hon F. S. O'Grady were scratched. Hurdle Race, 120 yards, ten flights. W. B. Craig 1 E. F. Blundell 2 F. Raine 3 M. Davie, J. Paterson, L. A. Macpherson, and W. Newton also ran. F. Johnston was scratched. A capital start was effected, all getting over the first hurdle together, Craig and Paterson got Blightly ahead of their company, and ultimately Craig obtained the lead. He jumped the last hurdle two feet before Paterson, and came in a winner. Paterson fell just after negotiating this obstacle. Time—Nineteen seconds and fourfifths. Two Miles Walking. H. Ford 1 A. E. Rhodes 2 M. Gray also started, but dropped out after the first round Ford, soon after starting took the lead and maintained it to the finish, accomplishing the eight laps as follows : First, lmin 43secs; second, lmin 69secs ; third, 2min ; fourth, lmin 59secs ; fifth, 2min lOsecs ; sixth, 2min lOsecs ; seventh, 2min 6sec : eighth, .2min. Rhodes did the distance in 16min 30sec. 100 Yards Race. R. Westenra ... -. 1 F. Johnston 2 E. H. Martelli 3 Blundell did not run. Westenra took the lead when the pistol fired. Johnston coming next, and Martelli third. Martelli lost ground at the start, but picked himself up very gamely. Westenra landed himself a winner by a foot, a similar distance separating the second man, Johnston, from Martelli, who would have been dangerous if the distance had been a little further. Time—Eleven seconds and onefifth. Pole Jump. W. Newton (Bft 3in) 1 E. H. Cameron (Bft) 2 W. B. Craig, who failed to go above 7ft lOin, and J. C. Cook, who gave in after getting over 7ft, also competed. 440 Yards. F. Johnston 1 J. W. Davis 2 M. Davie.. 3 W.B.Craig 0 The starter got them off well together. Craig soon showed in front, Johnston being close up, Davis being third, and Davie last. Craig led till approaching the turn, making the pace exceedingly warm. Johnston here closed up with him, and before coming into the straight Craig collapsed and fell out. Davis made a strong effort to overhaul Johnston, but failed, the latter winning by about five yards, Davie being about seven yards behind the second man. Time—s7secs. Putting 16lb Stone. L. Macpherson (29ft 3in) ... 1 E. F. Blundell (28ft lin) ... 2 B. M. Moorhouse, J. F. Mitchell, and N. McLean, al6o competed. Long Jump. J. Paterson (18ft) 1 E. F. Blundell (17ft lOin) ... 2 F. Johnston, who was close up to the second man, W. Newton, C. S. Fraser, and L. A. Macpherson, also competed. Steeplechase (Ladies' Cup), 1£ Miles„ M. Gray 1 J. W. Davis 2 | C. H. Delamain 3 T. H. Rawson 4 E. Peter, W. H. Hall, W. B. Craig, A. E Rhodes, M. Davie, G. B. Hall, F. J. Kaine, L. A. Macpherson, and E. H. Martelli, also F. Johnstone, J. Paterson, Dr Macintyre, G. L. Meason, F. W. Tescbemaker, A. Turnbull, S. A. Bristol, and G. J. Dennistoun, were scratched. Rawson went away with the lead. Coming round past the starting post, after going once round the course, Rawson was leading by about twenty yards, Davis and Gray being second ; the others following in the order named : Delamain, G. B, Hall, Davie, Peter, Macpherson, Martelli, Cook—the others nowhere. After this Gray forged a few yards ahead of Davis, and gained rapidly on RawsoiVfuArboat half way round the course both Gray an! Davis passed Rawson, and Boon
afterwards Delamain did likewise. Davis gained rapidly on Gray, and both took the fence before the water jump at once. They kept pretty well together till the second hurdle from home, when Davis gave in, and Gray came away a winner. Davis took second place, Delamain being a bad third, and Rawson about ten yards behind him, the others being all fallen out. Time, 9 min 24 sec. Hop, Step, and Jump. W. B. Craig (38ft Sin) 1 J. Paterson (38 ft 3in) 2 E. F. Blundell, F. Johnston, W. Newton, C. 8. Fraser, and J. 0. Cook also competed. R. Westenra and I. A. Macpherson were scratched. Throwing 16lb Hammer. N. McLean (72ft Gin) 1 F. J. Raine (68ft lOiu) ... 2 L. A. Macpherson (67ft Bin) ... 3 A. Turnbull and Dr Maclntyre also competed.
