Auckland, May 5. A serious collision occurred between the barque Cabarfeidh, bound for Newcastle, ■ind the schooner Maggie entering the port. The barque luffed and came smack into th< schooner, the jibboom head of the former vessel carrying away the schooner’s mainmast and staving her in on the port side. The mast and boom came down with a rrash, and narrowly escaped falling on Caj t in Martin, who immediately jumped into the boat, thinking the vessel was cut in two. The mate jumped into the chains of the Cabarfeidh and got aboard that vessel. After the collision the two vessels remained fouled for some time. Captain Martin rowed round several times before he could find the schooner in (he uncertain light, and he also thought his mate had been drowned. Ultimately the Maggie was found right under the barque’s nose. Within ten minutes of the crash there was a foot and a half of water on the schooner’s cabin floor, and the captain and mate who had returned to the vessel bad just made up their minfli to make
for town in their dingy, when the schooner Helen happening to paa« offered to tow the schooner up, which was successfully accomplished and the matter reported to the Collector of Customs, Mercer telegrams state that the new steamer Quickstep, on the Waikato river, struck on a Snag and sank. Onehunga, May 6 The Phosbe sailed South at 8.30 this morning. The passengers for Lyttelton are Mr and Mrs Pope, Mr and Mrs Weaver, Miss Frost, and Mr Kennedy. , Wellington, May 5. The tramway promoters having now completed the legal notices, and all other conditions of the Tramways Act, expect to obtain final authority next week to commence operations. It is said that the undertaking will be a great success. Seven firemen left by the Arawata this afternoon, to take part in the firemen’s contest at Ballarat. Dunedin, May 5. Mr Mackay, of the Bruce Herald, has commenced an action against the National Bank for £15,000 damages, for dishonoring a bill. He announces that he has retained Mr Macassay. In the grain market, wheat commands a ready sale ; good sound milling, 4s 6d to 4s 7d; ordinary, 4s 4d to 4s sd; oats, 2s, best milling; good feed, Is 9d to Is lOd, in good demand. Barley is dull. Bluff, May 5. The sa. Bingarooma left Melbourne at 1 p.m. on the Ist; passed Swan Island on the following day, and experienced S. W. winds and fine weather until arriral on the sih, at 4 p.m. She brings 410 tons cargo, nineteen saloon, and twenty-two steerage passengers, for all ports. She sails for Dunedin at 4 pm. to-morrow. Passengers for Lyttelton— Saloon : Master Pattle, Rev J. Lyle, four in steerage, and 100 tons cargo.
