PREBBLETON EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT.

The following resolutions were brought before a meeting of ratepayers of this district, held in the schoolroom, on Monday evening last, the chairman of the school committee in the chair. Proposed by Mr J. W. Anderson, seconded by Mr Maskrey, and carried—" That whereas two, if npt three, separate commissions will have to be paid for the collection of the building rate in this district, together with fees for three separate copies of rate rolls, it is the opinion of this meeting that these costs and charges, resulting from the blunders of the Education Department, should not be cha'ged against the district, but paid by the Government" Moved by Mr Maskrey, seconded by Mr J. W. Anderson, and carried —" That in the opinion of this meeting, the action of the Government in appointing Mr John Taylor to collect at a larger per centage the buildiDg rate, in place of Mr F. Brake, who was gazetted in June last, and who has, so far as this meeting is aware, done nothing to forfeit public confidence, is unjust to Mr Brake, and unwarranted by the circumstances." Moved by Mr Hazelhurst, and in the absence of any other seconder, seconded pro forma by the chairman — " That seeing the building rate will have to be paid, this meeting is of opinion it should be paid at once without further discussion.' Moved as amendment by Mr J. Htydon and carried:—" That this meeting regrets to learn it is the intention of the Government to endeavour to collect the Is building rate pro claimed in June last, and based upon the old assessment ; that whereas a rate of 9£d in the pound, based upon the new assessment, would meet all the liabilities of the district, it is the opinion of this meeting such a rate would be more equitable and just," Moved by Mr J. W. Anderson, seconded by Mr \Vm. Jackson, and carried—" That, seeing it has hitheit i been customary for the Government to ask school committees to recommend suitable persons to collect the household rates and children's fees, the Superintendent be respectfully requested to appoint Mr H. Brake to collect such rates in this district." After a vote of thanks had been given to the chairman, the meeting adjourned.
