One hundred and twenty houses have been destroyed in Upper Moravia by a flood. A feature of the Sunday dinners at the California State prisons is a 12001 b bread pudding. Professor Berry will probably be secretary of tbe new Scotch University Commission, of which Lord President Inglis will be the chairman, and Sir William Sterling-Maxwell a member. Prince Leopold has been advanced to the 30ih degree at the hall of the Freemasons’ Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Kite, 33 Golden-square. Lord Carnarvon, as the head of the degree presided, and performed the ceremony. Miss Charlotte Cushman is said to be writing a book of personal reminiscences of the stage; and it is stated that Miss Arabella Goddard, who is at present in New iois, proposes, on her return to England, to publish an account of her tour round the world. The first book, entitled “ The Spoiled Child," of “George Eliot’s” new story, “ Daniel Deronda," was announced to appear on the Ist of Feb'uary. Other new works in the press are an account by Mr W. Gilford Pal grave of a visit lately paid to Surinam or Dutch Guayana ; a volume of essays by Mr James Russell Lowell : and a volume prepared by Mr Charles Francis Adams, entitled “Familiar Letters of John Adams and his Wife, Abigail Adams, during the Revolution." The town of Antwerp purposes this year, for the celebration of the third centenary of Rubens’s birth, to bring together all the master’s works existing in Belgium and other countries in one great exhibition at Antwerp. The idea is certainly grand ; whether it will be practicable remains to be seen. Telegrams from New York state that Malle Titiens had an immense success on her first appearance in opera in New York, in the character of Norma. We also hear from the Unit*d States that the first novelty which Mr Sothern will present on his arrival there will bo an original comedy, written by Mr J. M. Morton and Mr Robert Reece. Mr Sot hern will on bis reappearance at the Haymarket produce the same piece. A curious fact is brought to light by the annual report of the Tjnited States Commissioner of Education for last year. It appears that the civilised Indian tribes of Cherokees arc more liberal in their payment of teachers in schools than any other of the American states or territories. The average salary they allow teachers is 225d015. a month for men, and 200dols. for women, being at the rate of sdols. to the pound, £540 per annum for men, and £4BO for women. The district of Columbia, of the American territories, ' comes next, paying £331 per annum for men, and £IBO for women.
