BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. Monday, Aphid 24, Present —Grs Hawkins, Buist, W. Graham, T. A. W. Parsons, F. Graham, P. Cunningham, and M‘Donald. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr Hawkins took the chair. The minutes having been read, and the new member, Cr M'Donald, taken his seat, the clerk stated he had received since last meeting, £sl 6s. Correspondence was read — From the Secretary for Public Works, acknowledging Council’s letter re Sunday work on Gladstone pier. From Mr Thornton, Provincial Engineer, asking if it were the wish of the Council that he should continue the supervision of the works in connection with St David street sewer. From Mr Wynn Williams, as follows : « I am instructed by Mr Joseph Illingworth to give you notice that unless you stop the trespass by the contractors for the Time Ball Tower building by Monday, he will proceed to abate the nuisance. You will also be held liable with the contractors for the damage he has already sustained and any future damage.” From a number of residents in St David’s street, calling attention to the bad state of the street, and asking that it might be put in order. From Mr H. N. Nalder, Borough solicitor, as follows “On drawing the new lease from the College to the Borough Council of part of town section 125, and rural section 1, I find that it will be necessary for me to have a proper description of the land proposed to be leased, as it is not simply, as I understood, a lease of the other portion of town sectivii 125. By the description in the old lease herewith, you will observe that the rural land is described as running at a certain angle, which will of course be altered if the western side of section is leased to the Council, thus throwing the whole description, as it now stands, out.” With regard to Mr Thornton’s letter, it was determined that the Provincial Engineer be requested to continue his supervision of the work till it was finished. Respecting Mr Wynn Williams’ letter, it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of his Worship the Mayor and Or Hawkins, to confer with the borough solicitor, and take such steps as might be deemed expedient. With regard to the letter from the residents in St David’s street, the foreman of worts was authorised to expend £lO in repairing the road.
Mr Nalder’s letter was next considered, and that gentleman (being present) having explained the required alterations, it was moved by Or F. Graham—“ That a letter be written to the college authorities asking them if they will be willing to dedicate the road now in use to the public benefit, and cancel the existing lease,” Carried. The following report of the foreman of works to the lighting committee was then
read :—“ I beg to report to you the place? where I consider new lamps are required most if the Council intend to increase the lights—one at the corner of St David and Ripon streets, one in Exeter street at the junction of Little Bienchley road. I consider these two more required that the one above Brenchley farm, although such a one would be a great boon to those living above where the lamp would be placed. There are twelve houses above it, and it is rather a bad road on a dark night. The position of the lamps is shown on the plan.” Proposed by Or Cunningham, seconded by Or McDonald—“That the additional lamp? recommended by the foreman of works, and specified in his report, be erected at a cost not exceeding £10.” Carried. Accounts amounting to £6l 8s 8.1 were passed for payment. The Council then adjourned.
