Government have received the following telegram from the Chief Secretary at Brisbane, dated the 22nd instant: —“ Reliable information has just been received from Cooktown that Milligan’s rush is a total failure. Eight hundred men on their way back to Cooktown. Great dissatisfaction and distress prevail amongst them. Will you kindly cause notice to be given, warning

The Guardian and Southern Mercury were handed over to MrG. M. Reid to day, Mr Reid assumes the editorship. {From a correspondent of the Press ) Dunedin, April 23. Yesterday afternoon the whole of the compositors on the Guardian left, being unable to come to terms with the new proprietary, Mr Reid wished to have a day companionship on wages at £3 a week, and a night companionship on piece at the old rate Is 2d a 1000. There will not bo any stoppage of the publication of the Guardian, Mr Reid having taken other hands on, mostly from the Evening News. The News will be continued by the old proprietary.
