MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, April 22. [B:fore Q. L. Lee, Esq., aud Alex. Leau, Esq., J.P’s.J Drunk and Disorderly. —Two inebriates were each fined ss, this being their first offence. Lunacy. —A lunatic was committed to the Asylum. Alleged False Pretences.— Stephen Saul Brighton was charged with obtaining by false pretences a cart, va’ue £l, the property of James Martin. Susan Martin deposed that she was the wife of the prosecutor, who was a blacksmith in Tuam street. On the evening of the 12th, the prisoner and another man went to her place, between 6 and 7 o’clock. He said he had come to fetch the cart which had been bought from her husband that day. She said she did not know anything about it, and would have nothing to do with it. He Ihen took the cart away. He said nothing about his son selling the cart without his permission. In cross-examination, witness said that she had told the prisoner that if he had bought the cart it was his property, James Martin deposed that he had never authorised the prisoner to remove the cart. Had purchased it for twelve shillings and sixpence a few days before. A witness named Butcher deposed to prisoner going to the prosecutor’s wife, and telling her that he had come for his cart. He did not tell her that he had bought it of her husband. She had then said if it is your cart, you had better take it, away. The Bench considered there had beem some misunderstanding, and dismissed the case.
