ROAD BOARDS.
AVON. The Board met on Monday, Present—the chairman and all the members. The clerk reported the balance to the Board’s credit at the Bank to be £1033 12s 3d. The surveyor’s report was read and considered, when it was resolved that tenders be called for levelling the read to Strange’s. Kesolved — “ That the road adjoining the Sawyer’s Arms road be formed.” Instructions were given to lay information against all owners of horses or cattle running at large on the Caledonian and all other roads. Messrs Strouts and Adams saw the Board relative to the footbridge over the Avon, from the Wakefield road, when they were informed that no action could be taken in the matter until the road was dedicated. Mr Flint interviewed the Board to ask that something might be done towards repairing Aikman’s road. Resolved—“ That the surveyor be instructed to call for tenders for supply of shingle for Aikraan’s, Bastrick’s. and Sawyer’s Arms roads, to come in a week from date. Mr Rount-ee saw the Board to inquire their decision regarding the road he asked about last meeting, when he was informed that there was a prospect of the road being widened, and that the surveyor had been instructed to make further inquiries about it. Resolved—" That the clerk be instructed to write to the Drainage Board, asking what is the position assumed by them, and in the event of their having taken over the drains, begging them to give the subject their early attention, as many of them require cleaning out.” A letter was received from Mr Hill regarding over assessment of his residence. The clerk was instructed to reply and state that the Board had no power in the matter. A letter was read from the inhabitants of Cumberland street, Bingsland, requesting to have the road lately formed shingled. Resolved—“ Thai consideration of the matter be postponed for the present.” A letter was read, signed by twenty-six inha bitants of Papanui, calling the attention of the Board to the state of the surface drains in the village. Letters were received from D r s Brit tin and Townend, reporting cases of typhoid and scarlet fever in the district. The surveyor was instructed to take levels in Papanui, for the purpose of ascertaining the best means of draining the village. Tenders were received for the following works :—Shingling New Brighton and Tnnis’ road, and one was accepted. The tenders for the Shirley road were considered too high. Accounts were passed and ordered to be paid, The Board then adjourned.
