BROOKSIDE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A meeting of tl e householders in this district, was held on M mday evening, the 10th lost. About twenty householders were present; Mr John Cunningham in the chair. The chairman laid before the meeting a full report of the business transacted by the retiring committee, of which the following is a resume !—" The additions to the school buildings, from plans furnished by the Provincial Architect, have at last been accomplished, and your committee can now congratulate you on possessing school buildings second to none in the country districts. Whilst the alterations, over which the com. mittee had no control, were being carried out, the use of the Presbyterian Church was obtained for five weeks. The school had to be closed however, longer than usual during the harvest holidays. The efficiency, as well as the average attendance of the school, has materially increased during the last term ; the number of children on the school register is now 142, the average attendance last quarter 110, and the averages for the last week 115, and for the quarter ending March the 30th, ninety-nine. The progress made by the scholars is also very satisfactory, and reflects great credit on the master (Mr J. and his staff of assistants. Your committee have engaged the services of a full certificated mistress in the place of Mr W. Baxter, who h. 98 finished his term of apprenticeship as pupil teacher. The staff of now consists of a master, mistress, and two pupil teachers. You have now firstclass school buildings and an efficient staff of teachers, it therefore rests with the parents to co operate with the committee and keep their children regularly at school. It will now be your duty to elect three members of committee in the place of Messrs O. Withell, John Cole, and Thos Brooks. A statement of accounts, as audited by the Provincial Auditor, is laid on the table for inspection, which shows a credit balance of £6 12s 6d.
The leport and balance sheet were unanimously adopted. Messrs O. Withell, A. Stirling and J. Metcalfe were then elected to fill the vacancies in the committee, the number of which was fixed at six. A vote of thanks was then accorded to the chairman, and the meeting terminated, A meeting of the committee was subsequently held, all the members present, when Mr John Cunningham Was unanimously reelected chairman. The committee decided to meet the first Monday in every month, A meeting of subscribers to the Library was then held. After the accounts had been audited, which showed a balance In hand of £7 9s 7d, the old committee were reelected, and the following resolution was paged—■“ That the committee meet on the first Monday in every quarter.
