CANTERBURY RIFLE ASSOCIATION MEETING.
Second Day. The second day’s firing of the members of the association did not, as was anticipated, bring the matches to a close, nor will even to-day see the last of them disposed of. The only two concluded were that for the Mayor’s Cup and Mr Blake’s Challenge Cup. The first stage of the firing for the Licensed Victuallers’ Cup was just concluded when the day’s work was brought to a close. The firing commenced punctually at eight, at which time the weather was fine, but it very shortly afterwards began blowing in anything but a pleasant manner for the marksmen ; indeed, after the second stage in the Challenge Cup match had been fired, it was most unfavourable. In this match Tressider secured third place, but as these particular prizes can only be won by members of the association, his firing did not in this respect count for anything. But he as well as Pell and Kohn, of Dunedin, fired only for the purpose of pulling up their aggregates. The Licensed Victuallers match will be finished to-day, and the shooting for the All Comers’ match will commence at 8 a.m. The Companies match, and the International match will be fired on an early day to be fixed by the association. The shooting yesterday, notwithstanding the wind, was quite up to the average. At the close of the day’s firing, Lieut Warner called for three cheers for the Dunedin representatives, which were given most heartily. Lieut Pell and Volunteer Tressider responded in suitable terms. The following are the range prizes in the challenge match:—2oo yards, Marshall, with 24 points; 500 yards, Chapman, with 25 points; 600 yards, Cameron, with 21 points.
