VITAL STATISTICS.

The following is the Registrar’s report on the vital statistics of the various boroughs of the colony for the month of March:—

N.B. Although the Auckland and Hokitika Hospitals are situated outside the boundaries of the respective boroughs, yet the deaths in them have, for the sake of uniformity, been included in this report. In future reports endeavors will be made to exclude the deaths of those persona who at the time of admission in the hospitals were not residents of the boroughs. The population has been estimated by adding the excess of births over deaths since the Ist March, 1874, to the then census population. It is impossible to estimate the increase from immigration. The births were 52 more than in February. The deaths were 9 less in number than the deaths in February. Of the deaths, males contributed 88 ; females, 79 ; 98 of the deaths were of children under 5 years of age, being 58’68 per cent of the whole number ; 73 of these were of children under 1 year of age. There were 10 deaths of persons of 65 years of age and over ; 7 of these persons were males and 3 females. Of these, 5 males, aged respectively 70, 72, 74, 77, and 1 female aged 66, died at Auckland; 1 female of 83 at Wellington/! female of 86 at Nelson, 1 male of 80 at Christchurch, and 1 male of 80 at Dunedin.
