ACCIDENT. —As the mid day train to Timaru on Good Friday was being shunted alongside the platform at the Ashburton station, one of the six-wheeled second-class carriages ran off the rails, crossing the points and severely damaged one of the springs By the aid of a screw-jack and half-2-ff z-n willing hands Mr Warner, the Railway Engineer, who was present at the time, had the carriage on the road again in half-an-hour from the time the accident occurred, and the train then proceeded on its journey Rangiora Parish Church.— A meeting of the building committee of the Rangiora Parish Church, was held in the girls’ schoolroom on Thursday evening, the 13th instant. Members present—Messrs Merton, Chapman, Bell, Shaw, Cunningham, Buckham. and the Eev B. W. Dudley, the incumbent, who occupied the chair. Mr Buckham consented to act as secretary during the absence of Mr Tribe. The meeting was opened with prayer, after which the rev chairman said that his object in calling the committee together, was for the purpose of ascertaining who would help to collect articles for the bazaar, to be belt 1 at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Rangiora, on Monday the 17th instant, and also to ask the members who had been promised subscriptions to collect the same without delay. He also expressed regret at the apathy shown in the matter by his parishioners generally with regard to raising the funds necessary. He pointed out that a large amount of the money already received had been contributed by outsiders, and he trusted that now the additions to the church were nearly completed, that not only member? of the church but every member of the congregation would put his or her shoulder to the wheel, and help either with money (no matter how small the amount) or with ariiclcs for the haz tar. It was proposed by Mr Merton, and seconded by Mr Chapman, and carried —That the whole of the subscription lists and cards be called in, and that a meeting of the committee be held on Thursday the 27th instant, to see what amount is available from all sources for future payments to ’be contractor.” The meeting was closed with prayer.

John Phoenix had a tight with an editor. Mr Phienix observed: ‘ I thrashed that editor until both my eyes were blackened ; I drubbed him until I lost four front teeth ; I held my thumb in his mouth until it was nearly bitten off; I kioked him until I fell down stairs out of his gory sanctum.’ A singular case of poisoning has occurred at Devon port, in the family of a dairyman named Parnell. The mother of Mr Parnell had made some broth, of which the whole family (including a nurse and a charwoman), with the exception of the father, partook. All became exceedingly ill and vomited very much, except a little girl, four years of age, who, in spite of medical aid, died a lew hours afterwards. The others remain very ill. 'lt is supposed that the leaves of monk’s-hood had been used to flavor the broth, instead of parsley. The inquest has been adjourned for full inquiry.
