MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
♦ LYTTELTON. Thursday, April 13. (Before W, Donald, Esq, K.M.) Intimidation.— Peter Brown, on remand, was charged with this olTence. Mr Nalder for complainant, and Mr O’Neil for plaintiff. Nicholas Roderigue said he belonged to the Dumpers Society formerly, and the defendant also belonged to it. He was expelled from the society because he went to work with sailors against the rules of the society Brown used most abusive language to him when he went to work at the Gladstone Pier and threatened him. Stones were thrown at him when be went into the boat to go to work on Friday, 7th; there were twenty or thirty men about, but Brown was the first to commence. John Cameron gave corroborative evidence. For the defence Edward Lester said he was present on the Friday at the Screw Pile Jetty ; he was standing next to Brown. Roderigue was the first who spoke, and said, “ Here I come;’’ the other men then called out, “ There he goes.” A few stones were thrown, but not from that jetty; they fell in the boat. Charles Green, William Kelly, and George Wells gave evidence of a similar tendency Counsel having addressed the Bench, the accused was sentenced to be imprisoned for three hours, and without hard labour. Saturday, April 15. (Before W. Donald, Esq, Pv.M.) Assault.— James Ellison was charged by George Gray, pointsman on the Canterbury railways, with having assaulted him. Accused was fined 20a Assault and Threatening Language —Walter Holman, a seaman, belonging to the barque Inverdruie, was charge! by Alex. Williams with having assaulted him 1 and threatening his life, He was also charged by George Gilbert and William Carrol with having assaulted them. All parties belong to the Inverdruie. After hearing a nmi her of witnesses, the Bench sentenced accused to fourteen days’ imprisonment with hard labor ou each charge, making six weeks in all,
