The decision first arrived at was to pay only on the actual collection for the financial year, made within the financial year, but such a course inflicted great hardship, inasmuch as it is not the practice, and in some nasea not practicable, to collect within the financial year the amounts due for that year. The decision now is to pay on the actual collections within the finaucial year ou account of general rates not exceeding one -hilling (whether or not they belong to the •/ear), provided the total collections do not xceed the total amount a shilling rate is calculated to yield. The following is the Loan and Mercantile Agency's report, dated London, April Ist : " The wool sales opened flatly, Jcomprising 223,f 00 bales. Tha competition is receding ; quotations have receded a halfpenny to a penny. The principal decline is in medium and inferior cross-bred. The present quotations are not expected to be maintained. The next sales begin on the 20th of June. TaHow—Mutton, £43 to £4l. The wheat market is quiet ; Adelaide is worth 53s per 4961b5."
The Border Chief salvage case is being settled today. The claims amount to £3532, or about five per cent. Greymouth, April 12.
The Greymouth Coal Company struck the grit, overlaying coal in the shaft, at a depth of 225 feet.
The damage done by the flood in the town is much heavier than was anticipated. A six-roomed house at Cobden is washed away, and also several bridges in the neighbourhood. Timaru, April 11. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here this morning at 11.30, but no damage was done. The highest ranges are already completely covered with snow, which is said to indicate an early and severe winter. Port Chalmers, April 11. A smart shock of earthquake was experenced at 11.45, lasting for about eight seconds in a north-easterly direction, Shocks were also felt about the same time at Naseby, Queenstown, and Dunedin. DUNEDIN, April 11. The telegraphists of Otago intend erecting a handsome memorial stone in the Dunedin cemetery, as a mark of respect to the late Mr P. J. Bunny. The amount already collected is about £SO. [FROM OUR DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT,] Dunedin, April 12. Arthur Robert Moule was charged with obtaining the signature of a lad named Kellet to a deed, Avith intent to defraud. The circumstances of the case are very peculiar. He was remanded until to-morrow, bail being refused.
