POLICE.

To tJte Editor of the Globe. Sir, —" Observer" evidently has no answer to my strictures. I again say that it is a public scandal and disgrace to the police force in this city that such a state of things should be allowed to exist nightly in Gloucester street. To say that the cabmen are allowed to become a public nuisance because of the Theatre being a place of entertainment is a very flimsy reason, as a very good remedy could be adopted by ordering them to occupy the middle of the street instead of the footpath. lam assured that these cabs commence to take up their stand as early as seven o'clock in the evening, and if that really be the case, I am quite sure they are not then looking out for fares from the theatre at all events. It is more probable they are touting for a certain noisome calling which the police well wot of.

I have often wondered whether the force here are on particularly friendly terms with the unfortunates. I know that some of the members occasionally beguile the tedium of their monotonuus occupation by acting as amateur detectives. For instance, if I wanted special information how any of my friends disposed of himself by day or night, all I should have to do would be to look up my Policeman X, and in a day or two I should have all the information I required. Now, I think it would be infinitely more respectable if these worthies would stick to their proper work, and endeavour as far as in them lies to suppress public nuisances rather than either enacting the role of sneaking spy or touting for nasty purposes. Yours truly, RESIDENT.
