The Luna, with the Governor and suite, has arrived from Tauranga. The jury found Major Pitt guilty, and Mr Justice Gillies inflicted a fine of £SO, the defendant to be imprisoned till it was paid, The second charge was withdrawn. Two fatal accidents occurred this afternoon. A man named Baily, while working on the reclamation works in Freeman’s Bay. was buried beneath a fall of earth. He died within five minutes after extrication. About the same time, 3 p.m., a diver, named Henry Singleton, met his death under exceptionally distressing circumstances. He was engaged to examine the bottom of the Broderick Castle, and went down in a diving dress which had been noticed slightly leaking before put on, and was temporarily repaired. After being down fifteen minutes, he gave the signal to haul up. The party above were unable to comply for some minutes, and when brought to the surface and the helmet detached, the man was found all but dead. A delay again occurred in getting the dress off, and when the doctors arrived life was extinct. It is believed deceased suffered from disease of the heart. Arrangements have been made for the transfer to the Bank of New Zealand of the business of the Fiji Banking and Commercial Company, on terms which are understood to be mutually satisfactory. Immediate steps are to be taken by the former Bank to have the transfer completed, Grahamstown, April 7. The inquest on the late fire commenced yesterday, and was completed to-day. The verdict was that the fire originated in Miss Gray’s photographic gallery, but by what means there'is no evidence to show. A meeting, called by the Mayor, will be held to consider the measures to assist the sufferers. There are more cases of scarlet fever. A woman with seven children, living in a whare, has three down with fever. Dunedin, April 7. This morning Mr Bathgate gave judgment in the case of Firemen against Capt, Worsp, of the Phoebe, for plaintiffs, for the amount claimed. Mr Stout, for the defendant, applied for leave to appeal. The Magistrate refused, and said the proceeding of a company engaging men for six months at a fixed wages, and dismissing them because (hey would not agree to a reduction of wages, was one which could not be defended. Proceedings have been taken against J. G. S. Grant, the well known agitator, for hawking goods without a license. The goods are copies of his works and Mr Purnell’s pamphlet, “Our Land Laws; what should be their Basis,” but the charge has been dismissed, the Bench holding that the law under which the proceedings wore taken did not apply to the sale of books like (he “ Stoic.” If they punished defendant, they would have to fine all newsvendors. It is rumoured that the Evening News will be carried on by a new proprietary, possibly including a number of compositors now at case in the Guardian office. Mr Vincent Pyko has obtained a prize given by the Saturday Advertiser for the best essay on Local Government. Grain Market —A fair business done in wheat, from 4s 3d for ordinary, to 4s 7d and 4s 9d. Barley is offering freely, and best lots command 5s ; but there is a great deal of indifferent quality.
