THE POLICE.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sir,—Your article of yesterday showing up the meddling and impertinent vagaries | of our police should be read with gratificaI tion by thousands of your readers. Any impartial peruser of the daily journals in this place would suppose from the number of cases daily brought under the notice of the Magisterial Bench, that petty offences were one of the moat salient characteristics of this down-trodden community. It is known only to the few how these things are managed, and I have no doubt our worthy Resident Magistrate at times heartily anathematises the whole of the blue-coated fraternity. Instead of these fellows straining at gnats, I think it would be more creditable in them if they put down our local Alsatia in Gloucester street. It is a fact disgraceful to the Christchurch police officers that night after night a file of vehicles is allowed to occupy the side of the street between the newspaper office there and Manchester street. A few nights ago on my way to a private ball, I had occasion to wind my way through the unsavoury throng, and I counted no less than ten cabs and hackney carriages drawn up as though engaged and waiting for their fares. On my return at two o’clock in the morning there was still several of them in the same place, waiting, I suppose, until th< theatre opened again the next evening, and so save the drivers the trouble and bother of going home. If the authorities really countenance the nightly celebration of this open air society, I warn those who object to the hearing of inelegant language to avoid this pestilent plague spot. Yours, &c, resident;
