EXTRAORDINARY ATTEMPT TO SECURE A WIFE.
A glazier, named Lewis Conning, was charged at the Sheffield Town Hall with assaulting Fanny Canter under the following extraordinary circumstances : The parties are Jews, and some months ago the complainant lived in Riga. The defendant went to her father in Sheffield, and made arrangements with him to marry her. He wrote to her, making her an olier, and she consented to come home, promising him, if she liked him, to marry him. He sent her £2O to bring her home, and went to Hull to meet her ; but when she saw him she did not like him, and refused to marry. A few days ago he went with three friends to her house, and told her he had a sweetheart in Manchester, and was going to be married. He wished to part in good friends, and held out his hand. She took it, and he immediately tried to slip a ring on her finger, and began to repeat the marriage law of Moses. She struggled and screamed, and, when he found he could not complete the marriage ceremony, he struck her, and would have repeated the assault had he not been prevented. He declared he would kill her rather than she should marry anyone else. The case was not pressed, and the defendant was bound with sureties to keep the peace.
