MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, April 3. (Before W. H. Pilliett, Esq., J. P.) On the Spree. —James McAuslan (on bail) was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and with assaulting the police constable in the execution of his duty. In defence prisoner admitted that he had taken “ a drop too much,” and had been “ a little too free.” The Bench thought he had been both too free and too easy, and ordered him to pay a fine of 10s, and also 2s, the amount of damage done to the apprehending consteble’s coat. A Friend of His. —Henry Flight, a friend of the above defendant, who was with him at the time of his arrest, and who was then in the same condition of happy indifference, was also charged with being drunk and disorderly, and was fined 10s and costs, or the usual term of retirement from the cares of the world. Drunk. —Joseph Hawthan, for being drunk alone, was fined ss. Unhappy Fate. —Edward J. Wakefield, ex M.H.R., who bore on his face the marks of a strong personal encounter with a lamppost, was charged with being helplessly drunk at an early hour on Sunday morning, Edward said he did not remember anything at all about it. He was ordered to pay 5s towards the colonial revenue, or the usual alternative. He asked for time, but the Bench refused to depart from the ordinary course, and he was removed in custody of the police. A Lunatic. —Susan Collins, charged with being of unsound mind, was remanded until to-morrow (Tuesday), the officer who had the case in hand being engaged at the Supreme Court. Reformation. —Peter McGregor, who was a month ago charged with assaulting his wife while in a state of intoxication, and who upon that occasion had been remanded until to-day in order to give him an opportunity of reforming, now appeared in answer to his bail. Sergeant Pratt stated that since the remand defendant had joined the Good Templars, and his wife, who was before the accusing party, now gave her husband an excellent character. The case was therefore dismissed. This was all the business.
