WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

The following items are from the Western Australian papers : On February I Glh a very melancholy case of drowning occurred at Subiaco, on Monger's Lake, near Perth. .During the day a number of young people connected with the Convent school were enjoyirig a pleasant picnic. About half-past six some of the young girls were bathing in the lake. One or two of them were in danger of drowning, one girl having actually sunk in deep water, and another, who had endeavored to secure her companion, would have shared the same fate had it not been for the praiseworthy exertions of a young lad, who, noticing the danger of the two females, ran into the water with a stick, which the youiig girl who was struggling for her life was enabled to seize, and so save herself. The name of the deceased was Mary Ann Costello. At the inquest a verdict was returned of accidentally drowned. A lad named Ryan died from tetanus, produced by the blowing off of his hand by the bursting of a gun. The immigrants who arrived by the Robert Morrison were at once engaged. Sericulture has been commenceil, and is attracting attention. Mons Beaurteux has been voted a grant of land for the

purpose. He forwarded home by the last mail about 200 ounces of grain to Italy, aud is very enthusiastic as to the success of his intended speculation. An agricultural society has been established at Perth, aud annual shows will be held. Compulsory education is n<>w strictly enforced. Tho work of connecting the colony with South Australia by means of the telegraph is progressing apace. A station will bo opened shortly at Bremer Bay, distance about 100 miles from Albany. 'Die next station will be at Espcranee Bay, about 200 miles further. It is also proposed to have two other intermediate stations between Esperance Bay and Eucia—the terminus of the West Australian p rtiou of the line. It is confidently anticipated that the whole work will be completed, and the line in working order in the course of abjut fifteen months.
