CITY COUNCIL.
Monday, March 27. The Council met at 4 p.m. Present—The Mayor, Crs Turner, Ick, Hawke*, Gap**, Bird, Jones, and Schmidt. A month’* leave of absence was granted to Or Thomson. The Mayor stated that at the meeting of the Drainage Board, held that mpming, authority was given to him as chairman to issue a draft on London, and to pay to the City Council the sum of £IB,OOO for the outfall drain, and that afternoon he had placed that sum to the credit of the Council, He hope! to proceed to Wellington on Wednesday, by the Taupo, and trusted to obtain a further sum from the General Government. On the 31st instant, the sum of £9OOO, being balance of the £35,000 loan taken up by the New Zealand Insurance Company, would be paid to the Council. He had also to report the receipt of £1256 from the Provincial Government, being the last instalment of the grant for bridges, &c. The town clerk reported the receipts for the week as follows: —City rates, 1875, £97 15s ; Waimakariri rate, £l6 5s lOd; watering rate, £Bl 16s 4d ; fines from Resident Magistrate's Court, £3 5s ; licensee, £2 10s; rent from market place, 7s; Provincial Government last instalment on account of grant for bridges, &c, £1250; total, £l4Ol 19s 2d, Overdraft on general account, £1203 8s; overdraft on drainage loan account, £10,716 17s sd. Or, drainage rate account, £2160 4s 7d. Accounts to the amount of £205 9s lid were ordered to be paid on general account; on drainage loan account, £344 2s 2d ; halfyear’s interest on £15,400, or 308 debentures at 6 per cent, £462. The city surveyor reported as follows : “Aldred street I find is 40ft wide, and will cost to [form and shingle road and footpaths £6 15s * per chain. A fresh drawing of a footbridge for Antigua street will be laid before the Council this evening. I have designed it as plain and cheap as possible consistent with strength and durability. The piles and bearers will be of iron bark, and will be sufficiently strong to form part of the cart bridge when the Council deem it necessary to erect one. Tenders for the supply of 2000 cubic yards of shingle will will be laid before the Council this evening. The time for tendering for the fire brigade station is postponed until next Monday.” With reference to that part of the report as to Aldred street, the town clerk was directed to communicate with the inhabitants of that street. Cr Ick said that the works committee had approved of the plan, and begged to move—- “ That the Council approve of the plans for a temporary footbridge in Antigua street.” The motion was agreed to. On the motion of Cr Jones, the city surveyor was directed to call for tenders. The Council then proceeded to consider the tenders for the supply of 2000 cubic yards of shingle, when the tender of Mr James Brightling, at £416, was accepted. Authority was given to the works committee to complete the formation and shingling of Peterborough street east, and also the concrete channelling on the west side of Cathedral square. The health officer, Dr Deamer, reported that he had visited a mild case of scarlet fever reported in Hereford street, and giver the necessary directions for isolation. Letters referring to the putting down and flushing the side channels were read and referred to the works and sanitary committees, with power to act. On the motion of Cr Jones, the town clerk was directed to write to the secretary of the Insurance Companies, requesting him to pay in the momy promised as a contribution towards the erection of a new fire brigade station. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances was read and approved. Hawkers’ licenses were granted to John Smith of Stanmore road, and Benjamin Clarke of Papanui road. Drivers’ licenses were granted to George Smith, Charles Sadden, and David McKenzie. The Council then adjourned.
