March 26, A fire occurred this morning at a quarter past five. It originated in the back store of Messrs W, and G, Turnbull and Company, Willis street. A few days ago one of the storemen found a rat’s nest entirely composed of vestas and their boxes, and at a considerable distance from where the matches were stored. The Empire Hotel was emptied of furniture and stock. All the back part was burned down, and many of the lodgers lost all but what they stood up in. Several of them are commercial travellers, and have lost a great quantity of jewellery. Messrs Turnbull were insured for about £3500 in various offices, on building and stock, but the building and stock are valued at £7500.
