The barque Aden Is reported to have Sailed from Mauritius for Nelson on the 16th inst. The schooner Spray arrived at Wellington on the 23rd inst. from Lyttelton. The barque Australind, Captain Oliver, made the passage from Newcastle to Wellington Heads in six days, arriving there on Wednesday last. The good ship Lady Jocelyn, still commanded by our old friend Captain Jenkins, sailed from Adelaide on the 10th for London with a full complement of passengers and a valuable cargo. The barque Australian Sovereign, Captain Birch, arrived in harbor on Saturday, from Newcastle. Left that port on March 13th, at 6 a.m., had light easterly winds until the 17th, then strong S. W, winds to Stevens’ Island, which was sighted on the 21st, then heavy N.W. weather through the Straits, which held till off the Kaikouras, when she encountered a strong S.W. gale, which lasted for thirty hours, thence variable winds to her arrival as above. The Young Dick, from Hobart Town, arrived yesterday, after a protracted passage of twenty-two days. This was the more unfortunate, as there were sixteen draught horses on board, and the water ran short, causing the death of two of them. Every possible care was taken, and no doubt the mortality was lessened by extreme precaution. The schooner, as already reported, left Hobart Town on March 4th, light S.E. weather prevailing for some days, after which there was variable weather till the land was made to the northward of the South West Cape on the 16fh. Owing however to a S.E. gale springing up, the schooner had to run for Cook’s Straits, which were passed through on the 19th with light westerly wind. Cape Campbell was passed at midnight on the 21st, but on arrival off Kaikoras there was a dead calm, which lasted two days: A southerly gale coming on, it was deemed advisable to run for the Straits, and Cape Campbell was again sighted on the 23rd. That same evening, at 8 p.m., a furious N.W. gale set in, lasting through the night. The next day the wind was southerly, lasting to arrival oil’ the heads. The two horses died on the 25th. We may mention that during the heavy rain the lee scuppers were stopped, and the fresh water that accumulated mixed with bran and given to the horses as required.
