DUNEDIN JOOKEY CLUB RACES. Third Day—Saturday, March 25. (j From a correspond nt of the Press.) Dunedin, March 25. The weather kept fine to-day, with the exception of an occasional slight shower, and the attendance was very good. Some sensation work occurred in connection with the steeplechase, Tommy Dodd, Kildare, and Banjo being scratched; Banjo was withdrawn at 10.20 this morning, and Kildare at 12 o’clock. About Tommy Dodd there is sure to be some dispute. The secretary found a letter at his office at 10 o’clock this morning, notifying the scratching ; but previous to this, notice to the same effectfwas posted up at the Empire by Mr Campbell. The race was therefore left to Auckland Kate, and Native. The following are the results of the different events:— Handicap Steeplechase, of 100 sovs, with a sweep of 5 sovs each for acceptors ; the amount accruing from the sweep to go to the second horse. Entrance, 4 sovs. About three miles, over such fences as the stewards may appoint. Mr O’Brien’s br m Auckland Kate, aged, lOst 51b (W. Enderson) 1 Mr McGavin’s b g Native, 4 yrs, 9st (T. Cotton) 2 Mr Davis’s b g Theodore, aged, list 71b (P. Hedge) 0 Tommy Dodd, Kildare, and Ba* jo were scratched. Native carried 71b overweight. Betting—3 to 2 on Theodore; 3to 2 agst Auckland Kate; 5 to 1 Native. This race, after causing a good deal of comment by the scratching of Tommy Dodd and Banjo, turned out a perfect farce. Kate led over the in and out jump opposite the the Stand, Theodore next, Native baulking. Cotton got him over at the second attempt, but he baulked at the next jump, Theodore here followed his example, and while Kate was going away at her pleasure, jumping beautifully, these two made ludicrous attempts to clear the hurdles. At last Native got over, but baulked at the next, and at the water jump Theodore would not look at anything, resolutely declining to negotiate a fence. The end was that Kate won by a mile and a quarter in a canter. Native went round for the second money, but Theodore gave up after a mile. Time not worth mentioning. A protest was lodged against Auckland Kate, by Charles Turner, trainer for George Me Gavin (owner of Native), on the ground that Enderson dropped his whip at the water jump, and that it was picked up and handed to him again. A meeting for the consideration of the protest was held, and it was dismissed as trivial.
Forbury Handicap, of 160 so vs, with a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each ; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes. Guy Fawkes and Fishhook were scratched. King Philip carried 21bs, and Hercules 71b, overweight. Betting—Even on Ariel ; 2 to 1 agst Punga ; 3 to 1 Hercules ; 4 to 1 Right Bower and King Philip ; 6 to 1 Tadmor ; 8 to 1 Haphazard and Cloth of Gold. After one false start, in which Haphazard went 200 yards, a good one was effected, Punga cutting out the running, Right Bower second, and Ariel third. These three led past the stand, Haphazard being fourth, and Tadmor next, King'Philip gradually falling back. Rounding the turn Punga further increased her lead to two clear lengths, and appeared to be running away with the race, but a quarter of a mile further on Ariel drew up t® her, and the pair raced neck and neck to th® entrance of the straight. Hercules at the Mme time came up, and Bight Bower
falling back Tadmor took his place, and Cloth of Gold also came up to the fore. A grand race ensued up the straight between Ariel on the inside, and Cloth of Gold on the outside, Tadmor half a length behind the pair, Hercules giving way. The three leaders were ridden hard and flogged all the way up the straight, but Cloth of Gold kept a short head iu advance and boring Ariel on to the rails was landed a winner, Tadmor a grand third, Punga fourth. Time, 2miu SOaecs. A protest was lodged by George Cutts against the winner on the ground of unfair riding on the part of Derritt in jamming Ariel against the rails. After the stewards had taken evidence, the protest was disallowed. Town Plate, of 100 sovs, with a sweep of 5 sovs each ; the second horse to receive the amount accruing from the sweepstakes ; entrance, 4 sovs ; two miles and a distance ; weight for age. The winner of the Newmarket Stakes to carry 71bs extra, Mr Redwood’s blk h Guy Fawkes, 4 yrs, 9st (T. Lyford) 1 Mr Campbell’s hr c Tattler, 3 yrs, 7st9lbs (G, Rowland) 2 King Philip, Fishhook, Daniel O’Rourke, Korari, Amohia, and Punga were scratched. Betting—4 to lon Guy Fawkes. The race, if it can be so called, needs no description. Th° two horses cantered round together till 200 yards from home, when a sort of a gallop was indulged in, Guy Fawkes winning as be liked by a couple of lengths. Flying Handicap, of 80 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each ; the amount accruing from the sweepstakes to go to the second horse ; one mile and a distance ; nomination, 2 sovs; acceptance, 2 sovs. Fishhook (Tallan) 1 Guy Fawkes (T. Lyford) 2 Wee Lad (S. Smith) 3 Parawhenua (Bremner) 0 Pungawerewere ... (H. Rowland) 0 Steamer (J. Allen) 0 Elfin King was scratched. Betting—Even on Guy Fawkes ; 2 to 1 against Parawhenua, 3 to 1 Punga, 4 to 1 Wee Lad, 6 to I Fishhook, 10 to 1 Steamer. Four false starts were made owing to Wee Lad’s disinclination to start. At last a capital one was obtained, and past the stand Fishhook, Parawhenua, and Wee Tad led abreast, Punga next, Steamer and Guy close up. Going round the course Fishhook gradually drew away from the field, but opposite the stand all closed up together again. Fishhook left a gap between himself and the others, but just before entering the straight Guy answered gamely to his lider’s call, and looked as if he would overhaul the leader. Lyford. however, had to pull out the whip to him, and tiring under his weight he allowed Fishhook to come in a rather easy winner by three lengths, Wee Lad a good third, Steamer fourth, Parawhenua fifth, Punga, who ran last nearly all the way, coming in half a dozen lengths behind him. Time—2 min 5£ secs. The result was a slice of luck for the bookmakers, as Fishhook had not been backed.
Benevolent Scurry, for a purse of—sovs; one mile and a distance; catch weights; post entry, 10s. The whole of the proceeds of the race to be presented to the Benevolent Institution. The rider of the winner to receive a saddle and bridle, the second horse a whip, and the third a pair of spurs. Mr Goodman’s Glengarry 1 Mr Smith’s Wee Lad ... 2 Mr McKay’s Hector 3 Saladin, Kathleen, and Pakeha also ran. Betting—Even against Glengarry, 3 to 2 Wee Lad, 5 to 1 anything else. A capital start was effected, Hector, Wee Lad, Pakeha cutting out the running. Wee Lad then took a decided lead, but at the mile Glengarry came up with a wet sheet, passed his horses, and collared Wee Lad ; a fine race ensued up the straight, but Glengarry had always the best of it, and won by a short head, Hector third. Consolation Handicap of 70 sovs; the second horse to receive 20 sovs from the stakes; post entry 2 sovs. One mile. Elfin King ... 1 Right Bower *. 2
