The ketch Emerald sails for Napier on Monday next, with a cargo of oats and grass seed for Messrs Cuff and Graham. The Cleopatra cleared tor Adelaide yesterday, and went out into the stream ready for sea. The s.s. Taupo left Onehunga on Sunday, the 19th, at 3.30 p.m; anchored at the Heads at 5 p.m, the bar being signalled impassable; crossed the Manakau bar at 4 p.m, on Monday, and arrived at Taranaki at 8 a.m, 21st; discharged 80 tons of general cargo, and left again at 12.30 p.m, arriving at Nelson at 6 a.m on the 22nd; left same tide at 7 a.m; through the French Pass at ll a m. and arrived at Picton at 5 p.m; left again at 5.30 p m, arriving in Wellington at 10.20 p.m. the same day; left at 2 p.m. on the 23rd. Experienced moderate S.W. winds throughout the passage, arriving in harbour at 11.45 a.m. yesterday. Sailed for Port Chalmers at 3.20 p.m. yesterday. The well-known barque Hopeful, Captain Luly, completed her last trip from Newcastle this season yesterday, coming to an anchorage off the breakwater at 9.30 a.m, Reports leaving Newcastle on Thursday, March 9th, and experiencing easterly winds for six days, after which had strong westerly till March Ulst, when Cape Farewell was made at daybreak. Had strong N.W. winds through Cook’s Straits to Cape Campbell, which was passed on the 22nd at 9p m. Same night a tremendous gale set in from the S.S.W, and lasted several hours. The wind, which lashed the sea into one mass of foam, was accompanied with intensely vivid lightning and heavy rain and hail, the barometer standing at 28.90, and the vessel being about 30 miles from Bank’s Peninsula. Weather continued squally all night; arrived at an anchorage inside the Heads on Thursday night, and ran up harbour as above. As stated yesterday, the Hopeful loads for United Kingdom immediately on discharge. The ships Otaki and Conflict cleared the Customs yesterday. The former is bound lor the Bluff, and sails from here this morning, if possible. She lias now on board a stiffening of 5000 sacks grain, and as there is plenty of cargo for her at Invercargill, no doubt she will have quick despatch at the Bluff. The latter sails for Newcastle, N.S. W., where a load of coals will be shipped for San Francisco, and will leave here on Sunday, weather permitting. The Rangltlkel and Jessie Osborne were brought into the Gladstone pier yesterday. The former will be berthed Inside at the outer tier, and the latter take the berth outside the Soukar, the Himalaya shifting to the position outside the Rangitikei. The Himalaya has now 5300 sacks grain on board, 2100 bales wool, and 100 casks tallow. Great delay has occurred in forwarding grain for this ship irom inland stations.
The barque Ansdell, Captain Barnes, arrived in harbor yesterday at 11 a.in. Reports leaving Newcastle at 6 p.m. on the Bth, and having light E.S.E. weather for the first three days, after which it changed to N.E. Sighted Cape Farewell on Saturday last, the wind then being westerly. Made Kalkouras on Sunday morning, and thence experienced heavy westerly and southerly gales to arrival as above. The Ansdell brings a cargo of piles and timber for Messrs Hawkins and Co, tor continuation of works on the breakwater. Messrs McMeckan, Blackwood and Go’s favorite 8.8 Otago, Captain Calder, arrived in harbor at daybreak yesterday, and was moored at the Gladstone pier. Her report states that she left Sandridge at 2.30 p.m on the 13th inst, cleared Port Philip Heads at 6.10 p.m, and passed the Sisters at 5.30 p.m on the 16th. Strong easterly winds and a heavy cross sea were experienced until the 17th, when the frind went round to the southward and S.W., and blew a heavy gale, which continued during the remainder of the passage. She passed the Solander at 6 p.m on the 20th, arrived ofl' the Bluff at 10 p.m. Hove to for the night, and went in next morning. Discharged a large cargo, and left at 4 p.m, ran up with a heavy N.W. gale, blowing abeam, attended by frequent and severe rain squalls, and arrived at Port Chalmers on the 22nd at 6.15 a.m. Left again at 7.30 a.m on the 23rd, and arrived at Lyttelton Heads at 1 a.ra yesterday, running up harbor and mooring as above. The Otago brought 250 tons of cargo from Melbourne, 150 of which is for this port.
