CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Globe.

SIR, —Allow me a space in your columns to contradict, in the most unqualified manner, the local which appeared in the Lyttelton Times of this morning, stating “ That the arrangements with a view of erecting a new theatre on the present site have fallen through.” So far from that being the case, I have to state that Mr Baylee, of the Criterion Hotel, one of the three purchasers of the lease at the recent auction, has left Christchurch for Dunedin for the purpose of having plans prepared for a theatre on a scale worthy of Christchurch, and, as far as possible, similar to the Princess Theatre in Dunedin. The new theatre is to be built upon the present site in Gloucester street. On Mr Baylee’s return, prompt steps will be taken to form a company to carry out the above objects. Yours, &c, GEO, BEATTY. Christchurch, 25th March, 1876.

To the Editor of the Globe.

Sir, — I have just received from a friend a copy of your paper of March 17th, and in it a letter signed “ J. W. Treadwell,” making the following reference to myself; “but he (Mr Andrews) has closed his political career by accepting £3OO a year as overseer for the Government.

Now, Sir, I am not the least suprised at the statement, or at any statement that the fertile brain of Mr j. W. Treadwell may cause to be written to suit his own purpose, but if he is to succeed, and that only by pulhug me down while temporarily absent from Chiistchurch, and by damaging my character, it must be a sorry case of success, lest there should be any one believer in his statement, and that statement be unchallenged, 1 ask you to insert—First, that I am not in Government employ; that I have never been in it, and that I have never sought it, nor have I ever been offered any employment under the present or any previous Government.

lam st’ 11 . a plasterer carrying on my business as usual, now in Wellington, with my men and apprentices, completing a contract for a private firm (not with, or for the Go • vei-’ment) by inserting the above, you will much oblige, Yours, &c, SAML. P. ANDREWS, M.P.O. for Christchurch,
