DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES. (From a correspondent of the Press,') [By Telegraph.] Dunedin, March 23. After a boisterous night and doubtful looking morning, the weather cleared up, and by twelve it was beautifully fine over head. Though a stiff gale was blowing from the south-west, only one shower fell, though it was very threatening during the whole day. The course has been very dry for weeks past, so that last night’s rain only rendered it a little softer going for the tender-footed horses. The public poured into the ground in crowds, and the sandhills, as usual, were well patronised. On the course and stand at the time the Cup was run for, about 7000 people were present. Nothing was scratched before twelve o’clock, at which hour a pen was drawn through the names of Seauntreuss and Nora for the Maiden Plate, and Templeton and Korari for the Cup. The saddling paddock was thronged with the layers of odds, and outside were seven or eight listmen, who appeared to do a good business. The band of the Opera Company was stationed in the training ground opposite the stand, and considerably enlivened the proceedings. The start was made punctually at the hour fixed, and the following are the results of the day’s events : Maiden Plate of 80 sovs—The second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes ; entrance 3 sovs ; one mile and a half ; for horses that have never won an advertised prize exceeding £25 ; weight for age. Mr M‘Kay, senr’s, ch g Glengarry (late Kangaroo), 6 yrs, 9st 41ba (H. Goodman) 1 Mr O’Brien’s br m Auckland Kate, aged, 9st 41b (W. Enderson) ?, Mr D, Corson’s ch f Merrybird, by Stormbird—Merrimac, 3 yrs, 7st 81bs, (G. Smith) 8 Seauntreuss and Nora were scratched. Betting—6 to 3 on Glengarry, 6 to 4 against Auckland Kate, 2 to 1 against Merrybird. After one false start the three were sent away, Kate gaining a couple of lengths. Coming round the turn, Glengarry came up on the outside, and the two passed the stand locked together, both hard held, Merrybird lying a length behind, the pace very slow until a mile was gone over, when Merrybird went up to the leaders for a time, but soon fell back. Glengarry then gradually drew away from Kate, and had her in difficulties at the entrance to the straight, Enderson flogging her without effect, and Glengarry came in an easy winner by five lengths, Merrybird eight lengths behind Auckland Kate. Time—3mm 2sec.
The Dunedin Cup, a handicap of 400 sovs, with a sweepstake of 10 sovs each. The second horse to receive 50 so/s, and the third 20 sovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. The winner of any handicap race of the value of 200 sovs, after declaration of weights, to carry 71b extra; of two or more such races, 101 b extra ; of any such handicap race of the value of 100 sovs, to carry 51b extra; of two or more such races, 81b extra. Mr Delamain’s br f Pungawerewere, 3 yrs, 6st 101 b (H. Rowland) 1 Mr Ooombes’ br h Right Bower, 6 yrs, 7st 31b (S. Smith) 2 Mr Yeend’s br h King Philip, 4 yrs, Bst (Batty) 3 Templeton and Korari were scratched. Rory O’More carried overweight ; Amohia, 12£lbs ; Pungawerewere, The betting can hardly be described ; for Fishhook nominally at 3 to 1 with no layers, and 10 to 1 could have been had about anything else. King Philip and Rory O’More were surrounded by a crowd of admirers in the saddling paddock, and Gamecock also received a good deal of attention. A report having gained currency that Amohia would merely go to the post, she was much neglected. Pungawerewere was thought by some a little of. Rory O’More unfortunately ran away with Lynch in his preliminary canter, and went a mile before he could be pulled up. This .was very unfortunate for his owner, as he was going very strong. After very little delay at the post a capital start was effected, and Merry Monarch led a large field past the stand, Amohia second on the inside, Pungawerewere third, the rest all well up. Going round the course Seabird dropped behind, and Amohia followed suit. Gamecock and Rory O’More were also inclined to lag. Passing the stand the second time Pungawerewere had taken the first place, and Guy Fawkes had left the ruck, and taken second place inside, Right Bower third, then Fishhook, King Philip, Tadmor, Tattler, Rory O’More, and Cloth of Gold all together. A 100 yards further Gamecock ran off the course. On the opposite side of the course Pungawerewere still kept her lead, and Batty brought King Philip up on terms with Guy Fawkes and Right Bower. Loud cries in favor of the King were now raised, but Batty was riding him vigorously, and at the straight had to punish him. Delamain’s filly led by a length up the straight, and Guy Fawkes tiring gave way to Eight Bower, King Philip coming up on the inside, and for a moment looking dangerous. Rowland was, however, sitting still on Pungawerewere, and she came in a winner by a length from Right Bower, with any amount in hand, King Philip third, a length behind the Bower, Guy Fawkes a good fourth, the rest so close together that it was impossible to place them ; but Seabird and Amohia were last to come in. Time—4ifiin. 7-]sec.
Newmarket Stakes of 00 sovs ; entrance 3 sovs ; one mile and a distance ; weight for age. Mr A. Smith’s hr h Weo Lad, 6 yrs, 9st 51b (H. Goodman) , 1 Mr J. Srepheuson’s b c Steamer, 3 yrs, 7s t 131 b (Wattie) 2 Tommy Dodd and Nora were scratched. Betting—3 to 2 on the Lad.
The favorite was rather fractious at the post, but ultimately both were sent away well together, Wee Lad taking the lead by a length. This position was kept up for threequarters of a mile, when Wattie called on Steamer, who responded gamely, and got on terms with Wee Lad. The latter, however, easily shook him off, and won, hard held, by a clear length. Time, 2min 15£sec. Publicans’ Handicap of 100 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 2 sovs each ; the second horse to receive amount accruing from the sweepstakes ; one mile and a quarter , nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptance, 2 sovs. Guy Fawkes tLyford) 1 Ariel ... (J, Mathews) 2 H ironies (Bay) 3
Bitting—6 to 4 against Ariel ;2to 1 Elfin King ; 3to 1 Tadmor ; 4to 1 Guy Fawkes; 10 to 1 anything else, Nelly King bolted on her preliminary earner, and went four miles before she could be stopped. There were five false starts, Hercules getting away first each time, but in the actual start he was Uast past the stand. Guy Fawkes, Flying Fish, and Jack Flat led abreast, Bir William next, Nelly King and Rory lying behind the rest, who were in a cluster. Coming round the straight Rory fell heavily, throwing Batty in the ditch. The horse could not rise, and Batty after staggering to his feet fell again. Going round the opposite side the field was strung out in single file, Elfin King falling to the rear, Guy Fawkes still in the front, Ariel half a length behind Hercules close up. At the straight Ariel answered gamely to his rider’s call, and got on terms with Guy, and made a fine race half way up, but there the youngster faltered, and though he came up again, could only get his head to Guy’s quarters as they passed the post, Hercules a good third. Time, 2min. 19secs.
Rory’s accident appeared to be caused by his leg giving way, and by his fa 1 l was much hurt down the back and loins, and could not be'moved off the course.
Batty’s injuries are limited to a severe shaking, Rory O’More will have to be shot.
The Selling Race was a walk-over for Reclaimed.

Guy then went up and raced Pungawerewere, with Ariel and Tommy Dodd some lengths behind, racing for third place. Ariel improved his position, and round the last turn led, with Punga second, but Guy then came again, and passed Punga, who was beaten.
