Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton.— This church was lighted with gas for the first time on Sunday evening last. Amateur Athletic Club.—By an error the meeting of this association for reception of entries, &c, was stated as being this evening. It should be to-morrow. Christchurch Gas Company. The secretary to the Gas Company notifies that on and after Ist April next the price of gas supplied by meter will be reduced. Sale of the Theatre. —The lease of the site of the present theatre, with the building erected thereon, was sold by auction to-day by Mr H. E Alport. The purchasers were Messrs Hoskins, Baylee, and Beatty, and the price paid £9OO. Drainage Board. —At the usual weekly meeting of the Drainage Board, held yesterday, the applications, thirty-two in number, for the post of secretary and treasurer, were considered, and Mr E. H. Palmer was elected on a ballot. Antigua street Bridge. —lt is probable that the present foot bridge over the Avon, near the hospital, which has been closed as being unsafe, will shortly be taken down and be replaced by a substantial structure, as the City Surveyor received instructions yesterday at a meeting of the City Conned to prepare plans. Ornamental Planting, —At the meeting of the City Council, held yesterday, Cr Bird stated that Mr Armstrong, of the Domain Gardens, had informed him that he would shortly have a large quantity of trees and shrubs, which might be used for ornamenting certain parts of the city. He (Or Bird) mentioned this matter, so that if it were thought fit advantage might he taken of Mr Armstrong's offer.
Sunntside Asylum.— The attendants of the Asylum will give a dramatic performance to the inmates and their friends to-morrow evening. The piece selected is Douglas Jerrold’s nautical drama of ‘‘Black Eyid Susan,” and as the piece is very strongly cast, and new scenery and mechanical effects prepared, the result may be looked forward to as likely to be a success. The music incidental to the piece will be given by Messrs Weber, Thompson, Poore, and other gentlemen, who have kindly proffered their assistance. The Waitaki Bridge.— The North Otago limes of Saturday, says “ This structure, which is undoubtedly the finest bridge in New Zealand, has been taken over from the contractor, Mr McQavin, upon whom it reflects the greatest possible credit. We are glad to hear that a committee has been formed at Waimate, and another at Oamaru, with a view to making Mr McGavin a substantial presentation. We trust it will be largely subscribed to. It is suggested that if the funds will admit, that the presentation should take the form of a solid silver model of the bridge.” The Dunedin Races— A Derby sweep was drawn at the Commercial "Hotel, last evening, on the Dunedin Cup, Thera was a large attendance, and the winning numbers will be found in our advertising columns. At the conclusion of the Derby sweep a Calcutta sweep was drawn on the Cup. The following prices were realised, the value of the sweep being £7B 7s 6d :—Fishhook, £ls; Tattler, £ll ; Korari, fill ; Tadmor, £2 ss; Sir William, £1; Daniel O’Rourke, £2; King Philip, £4 ; Pungawerewere, £4 ; Rory O’More, £2 ss; Merry Monarch, £1 ss; Right Bower, £3 15s ; Guy Fawkes, £3 ; Templeton, £5 ; Seabird, £1 10s ; Amohia, £2 ; Cloth of Gold, £3 ; Gamecock, £3 16s. Sweeps on the principal events of the meeting will be drawn at Warner’s this evening. C.J.O. —At a recent meeting of the committee of the 0.J.0., a letter was read from the secretary of the Wyndham Jockey Club, in reference to the disqualification of James Lawson, owner, and Wiseman, the rider, and the horse Kuriwao at the last Wyndham meeting. The action of the Wyndham Jockey Club was endorsed by the C.J.O. committee. Another letter was read, from Mr A. St G. Hamersly, hon sec of the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase Club, requesting the u?e of the racecourse for the forthcoming meeting on the 24th May. The request was entertained by the committee. After some further routine business the meeting adjourned. Kaiapoi Regatta, The following entries were received by the secretary at six o’clock last evening :—Punt race—C.B.O.’s Flying Fish, Mr G. W. Wearing’s Skedaddle, the Vixen, and the Alarm. Four-oared Sweepstakes race—C.B.O.’s Cam, H.R.C’s Heathcote, and K.B.C.’s Pere. Champion fouroared race C.B.C.’s Cam, and C.R.C.’s Illyssus. Tug race—J. Perrin (post entries). Junior Four-oared race C.B.C.’s Cam, U.R.O.’s Sylph, H.R.C.’s Heathcote, C.R.C.’s Illyssus. Senior pair-oared race—C.B.O.'s Cam and Kiwi, U.R.C.’e Sylph, 0.R.0.’s Illyssus. Junior pair-oared race—C.B.C.’s Kiwi, H.R.C.’s Heathcote, O.R.C.’s Cam. Double sculls—Five entries. Entries were also received for the Rob Roy canoe race and sailing race. Post entries will be revived for the swimming races and the duck hunt.
