ROAD BOARDS.
HEATHCOTE. This Road Board met on Thursday, the 16th March. Present: Messrs J. T. Fisher (chairman), S. Manning, and P. Kerr, The foreman reported in reference to obstructions on roads at the Sandhills, and the clerk was instructed to serve the usual notices upon parties having fences across the roads to remove them, and also fill up or put culverts in where open drains have been cut. Mr Kerr reported that be had seen the Avon Road Board in reference to the balance of funds after building the new bridge near New Brigh on, so has to have the approaches to same made, and the Avon Road Board agreed to form the same if this Board would allow it to use soil from this side, which was agreed to, and that an appointment be made for Mr Kerr and the foreman to meet the surveyor of the Avon Road Board on the spot in reference to same. It was resolved, after long consideration, that Mr Burberry and others interested at Waltham in having the streets and footpaths through R.S. No 79 formed, be written to, informing them (hat if the Board levied a special rate the receipts would only amount to about £9O, and as the cost of forming same would be £232, it would leave a deficiency of £142, therefore the Board would suggest that those interested in this matter should first take steps to make up the balance, as the Board has no option but not to take over roads that have not been dedicated and formed. Mr McGregor waited on the Board in reference to a road near his residence, Sandhills, offering to pay part towards getting same correctly laid out. Deferred to next meeting. The foreman reported the bad state of a large culvert ou the Hills Road. Some correspondence was then read from Mr Horneman, at Sumner, re notice received by him to bury a dead dog. To be informed the Board endorses Mr Wad man’s action in the matter, and it has nothing to do with any cause cf complaint Mr Horneman may have against any person who may have destroyed the dog. From the secretary to the Treasury re General Government grant, stating that same would be paid on receipt of the Road Board returns from the Provincial Auditor. From Mr E. Garland, asking permission to take some stone from Rocky Point Quarry. Granted. From Mr William Palmer, asking the Board to clean and deepen drain along Canal reserve from Loggie’s gate. To be attended to on receipt of half cost of doing same, to be reported at the next meeting. From Mr A. Moore, Board of Conservators, requesting the Board to reserve all available willows for planting purposes. The foreman was directed to attend to the matter. From the Drainage Board, rc clearing out River Heatbcote, stating it could not attend to the same at present. From a resident at Woolston, complaining of an offensive smell arising from a butchery at corner of Mardon’s lane, The clerk was instructed to attend to the matter. Also to call for tenders for certain works ; to serve gorse notices where required ; to prepare a copy of rate roll for Registration Officer. The Board, after passing the men’s pay-sheet, then adjourned.
