ROAD BOARDS.
COURTENAY. The Board met at the office, White’s Accommodation House, on Tuesday, March 14th. Present —The chairman and all the members. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, a letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, stating that £250 had been apportioned to the Board for planting reserves, submitted to the Government, and approved by them last year. The surveyor was directed to write, informing the Government that the works would be commenced at once, and asking for information as to the mode of payment. Also, a letter from the Springs Road Board, enclosing a copy of the district map. The surveyor was directed to write, acknowledging the same with thanks, and stating that a copy of the new Courtenay map would be forwarded when finished. Also, a letter from the Lincoln Road Board, stating they were about forming twenty chains of the South road, near Weedon, and making repairs between that place and the Yankee crossing, to cost probably about £25. The surveyor was directed to write, stating the Board were prepared to pay half the cost, as per previous agreement. Also, a letter from the Provincial Secretary, asking for information as to accounts, &c. The surveyor reported having furnished the information required. Also a letter from the Registrar-General, asking for information, and enclosing forms to be filled up. The surveyor reported having furnished the required information. Also a letter from the Secretary for Public Works asking for names of chairman and members of the Board and their officers, The surveyor reported having furnished the required information, Also a letter from Messrs Lord and Anderton, expressing regret at some of their men having carted stones off the West Coast road at night instead of breaking them. The surveyor was directed to write, stating that their letter was unsatisfactory, as the general tone of it is contrary to statements made at the last annual meeting of ratepayers. Also a letter from the chairman Ashley Road Board enclosing resolutions passed by them respecting the formation of local Boards of Works in the various provinces. The surveyor was directed to forward copy of a resolution passed by the Board, viz—“ That the resolutions passed by the Ashley Road Board are, in the opinion of this Board, premature, as they consider they are not in a position to take any steps in the matter until the proposals of the General Government as to the various forms of local Government are officially known. In answer to a communication fiom Mr Gunn, of Racecourse Hill, the surveyor was directed to forward the following resolution :—“ That as Mr Gunn has allowed the Board to use the ditches through his property for the purpose of carrying off the storm water from the roads adjacent to the Bacecourse Hill railway station, the Board agrees to repair any damages to the ditches or fences caused by the oveiflow of the said Storm water.” The surveyor was directed to write to the Provincial Secretary, and inquire from him if an alphabetical list of those ratepayers who had paid their rates would have to be made up on the 31st March, and forwarded to the Registration Officer, for the purpose of having their names inserted on the electoral roll. The day-sheet, amounting to £l2 19s, having been adopted and passed, the surveyor informed the Boaid of his having been appointed Registrar of the Canterbury College, and requested to be allowed to resign. It was then resolved —“ That the Board, in Accepting Mr F. G. Stedmau’s resignation, beg to offer him their congratulations on his recent appointment, and to express to him their thanks for the zeal, ability, and integrity evinced by him in carrying out the arduous and responsible duties of his office during the last six years.” After some discussion, it was resolved “ That the appointment of a successor to Mr Stedman be deferred until the next meeting, and that he be directed to write to the Provincial Secretary asking for information as to the amount of funds likely to be at the disposal of the Board for the next year.” The members of the Board having made arrangements for carrying on the working of the Board in their own respective neighborhoods, the Board adjourned. MANDEVILLB AND RANGIORA. A special meeting of this Board was held on Thursday afternoon. All the members, viz ;—Messrs John 0. Boys (chairman), Blackett, Bramley, Hinge, and Parsons were present. Tenders were received, and one accepted for cutting the drain at Waikuku, It was resolved to put the following main road work in. hand at once, by inviting tenders as follows :—Shingling a portion of the Drain road and a portion of the Wood end road; also, repairing Oxford road, High street, and the North road from Ashley to Kaiapoi. The surveyor was authorised to procure the necessary timber for a new bridge over Southbrook, and to invite tenders for the labor ; also, to procure a design for a dwelling-house, to lay before the next meeting. The Board then adjourned. OUST. The Board held its usual monthly meeting at the Road Board office, Oust, on Monday, the 13th instant. All the members were present. Correspondence was read from the Provincial Secretary, in reply to the Board applying for a further sum of money for preparing the land of the reserves for planting, stating that £l6O would be granted upon the same conditions as contained in a former letter, A circular was read from the chairman of the Ashley Road Board, with reference to local government. The chairman was requested to reply to it. Mr Ruddenklau waited upon the Board, asking to have the part of the main Gust drain cut from the end of Donaldson’s section to where the line of drain enters the River Oust about fifteen chains, also offering to pay half the cost of the same. It was decided to call for tenders at once, to be sent in within ten days to the chairman. Mr Scott and Mr Benjiman waited upon the Board with reference to the drain across the main road near their places. It was decided that the culvert be cleaned out, and the drain at both ends cleared. Should this not carry off the water, a larger culvert to be put in for next Board day. Mr McCauly waited upon the Board with reference to the water lying on the Boundary road. The clerk was directed to report upon the matter. Mr Glen waited upon the Board, asking to have the road formed alonghis section in the swamp, offering M towards the work. It was decided that the work be taken up after the completion qf the part of the same road now under contract, should funds 6e available. Mr Webster waited upon the Board asking a
crossing to be made across the side drain on Terrace road, so as to allow him an entrance to bis land. The clerk was directed to have a crossing made. The clerk was also directed to report on the road leading to Ashley at the next sitting of the Board. It was decided that tenders be called for building a stable, for fencing in reserve, for metalling part of Terrace and Ashley roads, and that Kennedy’s drain be relet. One tender was received for Gust branch drain, along Olson’s section, and accepted. Accounts to the amount of £lB7 9s 2d were passed. The Board then adjourned.
