ELLESMERE DISTRICT RACES. [[BY PIGEON EXPRESS.] This Day, President—C. A. Fitzroy, Esq., M.H.R, Stewards —Messrs C. Bourn, R. Mcllraith, W. Bishop, J. Lewis, T. Bailey, Richard Frankish. Judge—Mr T. A. Winter. Clerk to Course—Captain R, B. Willis. Starter —Mr J. H, Watts. Clerk to Scales—Mr T. Richardson, Hon Treasurer —Mr W. Spring. Hon Secretary—Mr R. Winthrop, Through the courtesy of Mr W. Walker, who kindly placed his carrier pigeons at our disposal, we are enabled to place the results of the meeting before our readers. The attendance was good, and there would have been better sport had the races been open instead of being confined to district horses only. The South bridge band was present and played excellently. The first bird, the Shaughraun, was despatched from the course at 1.25 p.m,, and reached Mr Walker’s dovecote, shortly after 2 p.m. It brought the report of the two first races. The second bird, Fleetwing, left the court e at 2,38 p.m., and anived in Chriitchurch at 3.50 p.m. The third bird, Formosa, left the course at 3.35, and arrived in Christchurch at 4 5 p m i Handicap Hurdle Race, of 18 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 1 sov each for acceptors ; nomination 1 sov, to go to the fund; distance 2 miles, over eight flights of hurdles. Mr Cradock’s Phantom ... (Owner) 1 Mr Moll wraith’s Lunatic ... (Owner) 2 A capital start was effected. Phantom led over the first hurdle. On the flat between Lunatic got a short lead, and held it all round. Passing the winning post the first time round Phantom got a short lead, and a fine race ensued, both going over the second hurdle in company. Coming home the pace was made merry by both the horrei being well together. Crossing the last hurdle both were well together, and ultimately Phantom succeeded in getting the lead, and won by a short head on the post. Both hoDes were well ridden. Maiden Plate, of 20 sovs ; entrance 1 sov, to go to the stakes ; distance miles. Waterhen ... 1 Grecian Bend 2 Sultana 8
A good start was effected, Waterhen at once jumping off with the lead, closely followed by Grecian Bend, Sultana two lengths behind. In this order they ran the whole distance, Waterhen increasing her lead, and ultimately winning by three lengths, Grecian Bend a bad second, and Sultana five lengths in the rear, the rest tailing off. Trotting Race, of 5 sovs, and a Cup ; entrance 10s, to go to the stakes ; lOst up ; tance 3 miles. Mr Storey’s Jessie ... • 1 Mr Doyle’s Queenie ... 2 A good start was effected, both horses going away together, and keeping so for some distance, Queenie having a little the best of it. At the bottom turn Mr Doyle's horse broke, and Mr Storey’s then went away with a lead, which was held all round until coming to the post, when Doyle’s horse made a stmggle and got up, but broke, and Jessie went in a winner by two lengths. Bllesm*re District Purse, of 30 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 2 sovs for acceptors ; entrance 1 sov, to go to the fund ; distance 2 miles ; weight for age; winner of over £25 to carry lllbs extra, and of over £SO 211bs extra. Lemon Juice, 9st 91b... ... (Hawkins) 1 Yankee Grab, 9st 71b 2 Phantom (Griffin) 3 Muscatel was scratched. Yankee Grab went off with the lead, closely followed by Lemon Juice, Phantom in waiting. Passing the winning-post the first time, Lemon Juice still held the lead, closely followed by Yankee Grab, Phantom still waiting. At the back of the course Phantom went up to her horses, but was unable to hold her lead. Coming into the straight, Yankee Grab and Lemon Juice were abreast. Phantom having shot her bolt was out of it. Lemon Juice coming in for home got a lead, which he improved on the post, ultimately winning by about four lengths; three lengths between second and third.
