A scene ensued, and the galleries were cleared. Melbourne, March 16. It is stated that Mr Hugh Deck, a well known land agent, and largely connected with building societies, is in difficulties. His liabilities are said to be eighty thousand pounds, but his assets, when realised, will more than cover the amount. INTERPROYINCIAL. Auckland, March 16. In the case of the mate of the barque Stag v the Captain, to recover three months’ wages for wrongful dismissal, the Resident Magistrate gave Judgment for two months’ pay, arguing that although the articles gave the captain the right to discharge at any port, the words “ £l9 per month ” made the engagement by the month. Mr Richmond, solicitor for the defence, asked leave to appeal, but the application was refused until the judgment was satisfied. James Kelly, accused of bigamy, was discharged. Wellington, March 16. Sailed—Tui, for Kaikoura and Lyttelton, at 10 p.m. Passengers—Mrs Bullen, Miss Simpson, Dunedin, March 16. In banco Mr G. E. Barton moved, in Hughes v Shand, breach of promise case, for a rule nisi for a nonsuit, on the ground that there was not sufficient corroboration of evidence of alleged promise of marriage to satisfy the requirements of the statute. The rule was granted. The Judge suggested that the rule should be removed for argument to the Court of Appeal, the points being new, but on that suggestion no conclusion was come to. An action by a discharged fireman against Captain Worsp, of the Phoebe, for £l2 for one month’s wages, for wrongful dismissal, was partly heard at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, and adjourned to enable the articles signed to be obtained from Wellington. The case arose out of the recent reduction of the firemen’s wages to £lO per month. Other firemen have like actions. Mr Florence made his first appearance as Don Caesar, in “ Maritana.” He has a good tenor voice, with great range and clearness, Miss Lambert, as Lazarillo, has much improved since she was last here. Madame Simonsen, as Maritana, was much praised. Blondin gave a brilliant display of fireworks. The attendance was about one thousand. THIS BAY’S TELEGRAMS. Auckland, March 17. Arrived—The s.s. Hero, at 1.15 this morning. The voyage was characterised by head winds. She brings 88 passengers. The wreck at Blind Bay, near Cape Brett, is reported to be the Blanche, schooner, the late Governor Ferguson’s yacht. The report arises from, the fact of the cedar fittings being found. Oamaru, March 16. Mr W. J. Steward, the late member of the Waitaki district, was presented this afternoon with a handsome silver salver and two hundred and fifty sovereigns, as a recognition of the disinterested manner in which he had served Oamaru and the district in the House for the last five years. Mr A. Gibbs, the oldest inhabitant in the district, and who has been thrice elected Mayor, made the Sresentation in a few well chosen remarks. Ir Steward suitably responded, and briefly summarised his political career, Dunedin, March 17. Wheat—There was moderate demfjid to west present iflijuircweutty but buyers were
disinclined to purchase too largely at the quotations. Good top prime, 4s 6d to 4s 8d; middling, 3s to 4s sd, The export demand for oats showed an improved market. New crop, Is 8d to Is lOd; 2s for best old crops. Barley—Quotations nominally 5s for best malting. The gross earnings of the Otago Railways for the monthjof February was £12,000, the expenditure £7,500. The Guardian points the earnings at £146,000 yearly, and the excess of receipts over the expenditure at £44,600. lu Banco, the case of Webb v the National Bank was incidentally mentioned with reference to an application for a new t.iial. Judge Williams said he was clearly of opinion that there should be a new trial in this case. Mr Webb some time ago obtained a verdict for £3OOO. Poet Chalmers, March 17. Arrived—The ship Manlesdeu, 75 days from the Lizard, and 78 days from London, glic brings 36 passengers and 2600 tons of cargo, inclusive of 20 tons of powder. She is the property of David Bruce, of Dundee, the owner of the Strathmore.
