Redwood's b g John Stovel. 5 yrs, flstGlbs 2 John Stovel, leadiug, waited too long to make his advantage a certainty at the close, and Isaac Walton, by a few vigorous strides at the last, which brought him to the front as they passed the post, made what appeared to those at a distance to be a dead heat, but what was really the winning of the race by a difference that was but slight and momentary. The race lay between the other two, or would have lain had Septimus, who had the inside running, not got round the hurdles to the right of the grand stand, and in doing so fallen into the ditch, giving his rider, Dick Barton, rather an ugly fall. Hokitika Handicap, of 60 sovs, with sweep of 5 sovs added ; distance, two miles ; winner of Goldfields' Handicap to carry 51bs extra. H. Redwood's c c Banker. 7st 91b ... 1 W.
