MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, March 15. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq.) Drunkenness.—The following inebriates were dealt with:—Alexander McKenzie, an old offender, was fined 60s, and cab hire Is. Elizabeth Bennett was discharged with a caution, and recommended to join the Good Templars at once. Drunk in a Licensed House.—Thomas Richards was charged with being drunk in a licensed house, the Cavershnm Hotel, and resisting the police in the execution of their duty. Defendant was creating a disturbance in the Caversham Hotel, and on the constable attempting to remove him, he assaulted the constable. Defendant, who had been several times convicted of similar offences, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour, and cautioned that if he came before the Court again, he would receive a long sentence. Vagrancy. Edward Goodacre was charged with vagrancy. It appeared that tht: defendant, who had no visible means of subsistence, had been found sleeping in the open air. Defendant pleaded to be let off, and stated that he expected to receive money from home. The Bench sentenced defendant to one month's imprisonment with hard labour.
