CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, March 14. (Before G. L. Meliish, Esq, B. M.) Drunkenness. Thomas McCarthy was charged with drunkenness and annoying passengers in a railway carriage on the Southern line. The guard stated that defendant’s conduct was so bad, that he had to remove him into the guard’s van to prevent him from annoying the passengers, especially a lady. The defendant called a witness named Cronian, who said he knew nothing about the matter. Defendant did not look to be drunk ; he seemed sober, but he had drink yesterday. The Bench said defendant must be under the influence of drink ; he would be fined 20s. VAGRANCY. —Joseph Evans Whitbey was charged with vagrancy in being an idle and disorderly person. It appeared that the prisoner had been in the habit of lying out in the open air in Cathedral square, and committing indelicate acts in view of little children and females. The' defendant, who made no defence, and who had £1 Is 6d on him when arrested, was discharged with a caution, and recommended to go to work. Lunacy from Drink,— Theresa Dixon, who had been in custody with a broken leg and suffering from delirium tremens , was brought up, and having recovered from the effects of drink, was ordered to be discharged to the hospital. LYTTELTON. Monday, March 13. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M.) Drunkenness and Obscene Language. Wm Brown, arrested by constable Moutray, was fined 10s, or in default, forty-eight hours’ for this offence. CIVIL Cases.— The adjourned case of Wood, Shand and Co v J. B. Mitchell, master of the ship Langstonc, was decided in favour of the plaintiff. ADJOURNED QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT. Tuesday, March 14. [Before G. L Meliish, Bsq.,R.M., Chairman, and G. Harman, Esqs, Commissioners.J The following applications for transfer of licenses were disposed of: — From Henry Lewis to John Barrett, the Devonshire Arms Hotel, Durham street. Mr Thomas appeared in support of the application, which was granted. From M. Oram to T. Pyett, the Golden Fleece Hotel, Colombo street. Granted. From T.. Pyett to William Robinson, wine and beer license. Granted. From the trustee of E. Horniman’s estate to Mary Schluter, Sumner Hotel, Sumner. _ Mr O’Neil appeared in support of the application, which was granted.
