COMMERCIAL.
♦ A fair amount of business has been transacted in the Import market during the week. The ship Langstone cleared for London on Saturday, the 11th inst, with cargo of wools, skins, wheat, &c, and afair complement of passengers. Sugars have been in fair request, several parcels of white crystals, brewers’ crystals, and yellow counters have been placed at full rates. Teas have been rather dull, we have only a few trade sales to report, at Is lid to 2s 6d d.p. English hops are in demand, and command Is Pd to is lid d.p. Bottled ales and stouts find purchasers at Us to 11s 9d for good brands, Bass’s bulk ale has been quitted freely, at £9 10s to £lO per hhgd. Hennessy’s case and bulk brandy have been sold to arrive, at 30s 6d and 8s i.b., the demand being good. Geneva has been forced off at very low rates. There is great enquiry for Dunville’s case and bulk whisky, but unfortunately the market is entirely bare of these lines; a few lots have been booked to arrive at 5s 9d for bulk and 11s for cases i.b. Fair trade sales have been made In rum; old tom at full rates. Tobaccoes have shown signs of improvement—twists and tens have been placed, at is 8d to Is 9dl.b. Blue Countess slates have been offered at £l3 10s per 1000, the demand at present is very small indeed. Galvanised' iron Is extremely dull, and difficult to place at cost. Cement—This lino is quitted In large parcels at 20s 3d to 20s 6d for Knight. Bevan’s (rand. Cornsacks move off freely, at 10s 6d to 11s; a large trade has been done in these during the week at the above rates. We understand large trade sales have been effected in Champion’s vinegar, at 2s 6d to 2s 7d d.p.; case meets with fair sale at 9s to 10s6d d.p. The outward Englishman, via gan Francisco, left here per the Granada on Thursday, the 9tb lost ; the mail yift Suez and Brindisi
leaves to-day per Arawata. The inward English mail, via thjs route, will probably arrive here to-day per Ladybird, it not, on Tuesday per Kingarooma. It will be gratifying to the farmers to learn that two local firms have chartered two large vessels to bring upwards of3ooo bales corusacks from Calcutta. As sacks from Calcutta can be landed here considerably cheaper than Dundees, it really means so much additional price to the farmers for their grain, as the cost of sacks undoubtedly comes out of the grain producers’ pockets, now that sacks are given in in Australia. These shipments must quite shut out importations ot Dundee goods. Messrs J. C. Corr & Co report on the live stock market for tie week ending Saturday, llth March, 1876—At the Rangiora Yards on Tuesday, 30 head of cattle and 10 horses came forward for sale, our entries being on accountjof Messrs Hoben, Wilson, Faulkner, Rowe, Head, Joseling, and Woodley. These we sold, witli some difficulty, at about the above quotations, the sale being a perfect drag throughout. We quote beef at 25s per 1001 b, and mutton l|d per lb. Messrs Clifford and Roper report on their usual weekly sale of live stock, March llth, as follows : Milch cows, £6 to £9 : calves, 4s 6d to 14s.
