UNIVERSITY OF NEW ZEALAND.
MEETING OF SENATE. Friday, March 10. The Senate met at 2 p.m. Present —The Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, the Primate, Revs J. 0. Andrew and W; John stone. Professors Sale and Cook attended, by request of the Senate. The report of the examiners for the Bowen prize was read as follows : “ Bowen Piize Essay ; year commencing Ist July, 1875 —We, the undersigned, being examiners duly appointed to examine the essays sent in for the year commencing Ist July, 1875, report that in our opinion the following candidate has sent in the best essay, and is entitled to the Bowen prize, viz, Henry Hill, of Christchurch.— Hugh Carleton, G. S. Sale, H. J. Tancred.” On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved—“ 1. That the Bowen prize be awarded to Henry Hill, Gloucester street school east, Christchurch. 2. That the Bowen prize for this year be given in books, to be selected by the candidate, with the approval of the Chancellor.” A letter from A. R. Fitchett, an undergraduate of the University, praying for a reconsideration of his case, was read. On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved—“ That, upon reconsideration, the Senate are still of opinion that they have no power to comply with Mr Fitchett’s request, ” The Senate resolved itself into committee, for the further consideration of the suggested amendments from the Professorial Board of Otago, The Senate resumed, and the committee was ordered to sit again on Monday. The Professors received the thanks of the Senate for their attendance. The Senate adjourned until this day, at 10.30 a.m.
