MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, March 10. (Before J. Ollivier, Esq, and Dr Back, J.P’s) Drunkenness, —The following inebriates were dealt with : —Joseph Kinley was fined 20s ; Simeon Kennedy, fined 5s ; Charles Thomas Cockerill who was also charged with the destruction of private property by breaking a window at the Scotch stores, was fined 20s, and 12s 6d, the value of the window, Peter Street, fined ss. A Street Row. —Alfred Burchill and John Harris Evans were charged with committing a breach of the peace in view of a constable. Mr O’Neill appeared for Burchill and Mr Slater for Evans, It appeared from the evidence that yesterday morning the defendants were quarrelling in Hereford street, near the Golden Age, about the possession of a horse, ultimately the quarrel became a struggle. Evans wanted to give Burchill into custody, but the constable refused to take him. Mr O’Neill submitted that a question of title being involved, the Court had no jurisdiction. Mr Slater followed with the same view. The Bench dismissed the case. Creating a Disturbance in a Licensed House. —Jeremiah Corboy and John Corboy were charged with creating a disturbance in the Borough Hotel, and assaulting the police in the execution of their duty. The disturbance took place near ten o’clock last night, at the hotel, and a constable, at the request of the barman, put them out. They then assaulted the constables, by striking them several times. Ultimately they were handcuffed, and taken to the policestation. The men were under the influence of liquor when they came to the house, and had one glass of beer there. Both were greatly excited. The defendants did not begin the row, which was caused by two other men. The Bench fined defendants 20s each. .
