MEETING OF SYNOD. Tuesday, Makch 7. The Senate met pursuant to adjournment at 10 30 a.m. Present—The Chancellor (in the chair), the Vice-Chancellor, the Most Rev the Primate, Rev J. C. Andrew, Mr Heale, the Hon Mr Gisborne, Rev W. Johnstone, Hon B. Stafford, Hon J. B. Acland. The minutes of the last meeting were read, and confirmed. A letter was read from Professor Shand, acting chairman of the Professorial Board of the University of Otago, forwarding certain suggestions with regard to amendments in the regulations of the University of New Zealand. On the motion of Rev J. C. Andrew, it was resolved :—“ That the suggestions contained in Professor Shand’s letter be considered on neat sitting day.” The report of the Tauranga Reserve Committee was considered. On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved : —“ That no present action be taken by the Senate in respect of the reserve promised at Tauranga.” On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved :—“That a Bill be introduced in the next session of the General Assembly for the purpose of vesting in trustees, to be agreed upon between the Government and the Senate, the lands reserved for promoting higher education in certain provinces, and of enabling the same to be administered for the objects for which they were reserved,” On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved :—“ That the Chancellor be directed to communicate the above resolution to the Government.” The report of the committee appointed to consider the case of the undergraduates who were gazetted as having failed to pass the University examination of 1875, was read as follows : “ Your committee report—“l. That by regulation numbered XX, clause 2 (Ist calendar, 1875), all students are required to pass an University examination in each year ; but as the regulation has been misunderstood, the committee recommend that no additional terms should be required from the students who have fulfilled their College terms by passing the yearly College examination. “2. That a notification be made that certain of the students, who were gazetted on the sth August, 1875, as having failed to pass the University examination, did not intend to present themselves for examination in any other capacity than as candidates for scholarships. “ 3. That it is advisable that in future the names of those candidates who may fail to pass be not published. “ Henry John Tancbed, “ Chairman.” It was moved by the Vice-Chancellor—- “ That by regulation numbered XX, clause 2 (Ist calendar, 1875), all students are required to pass an University examination in each year ; but, as the regulation has been misunderstood by the candidates, the committee recommend that no additional terms should be required from the students who have fulfilled their College terms by passing the yearly College examination." It was moved by the Rev J. 0, Andrew, as an amendment—“ That the words ‘by the candidates’ be left out. The question was put—“ That the words proposed be left out and stand part of the question,"
The Senate divided. Ayes, 6.—The Vice-Chancellor, Hon E. W, Stafford, Mr Cnrtis (proxy), Rev T. Buddie (proxy), Sir G. Arney (proxy), Mr Rolleston (proxy). Noes, 7.—Rev J, 0. Andrew, the Primate, Mr Heale, Hon W. Gisborne, Rev W. Johnstone, Mr Macandrew (proxy), Rev Dr Stuart (proxy). The amendment was declared to be carried. The word “ College” between the words their and terms” was struck out by consent. On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved—“ That a notification be made that certain of the students who were gazetted on the sth of having failed to pass the University examination, did not intend to present themselves for examination in any other capacity than as candid ates for schol arshi ps.” On the motion of the Vice-Chancellor, it was resolved—“ That it is advisable that in the future the names of those candidates who failed to pass be not published.” The Senate resolved itself into committee for the further consideration of the Chancellor’s report, The Senate resumed, and the committee was ordered to sit again next sitting day. The Senate adjourned.
