AQUATICS.

HBATHOOTB BEGA.TTA, 1876. This Day. Patron—His Honor the Superintendent. Commodore—J. T. Fisher, Esq. Vice-com-modores—J. L. Coster, Esq, H. H. Hannah, Esq, and a committee of fifteen gentlemen. Starter—Mr J. H. Herdson. Umpire—Mr F. H. Digby. Judge—Mr H. Thomson. The annual Heathcote Regatta took place to-day, over the course used for the last Heathcote Regatta. The course was a very good one, being carefully staked, and the general arrangements made by the committee were satisfactory. It is to be regretted that the committee have left this regatta so late in the season, though the entries in several of the races were numerous. The blue ribbon of the regatta was of course the senior fours, for Mr Jameson's cup. For this only two entries were made, viz, the Cure Club's Cam and the Heathcote Rowing Club's Heathcote. The Cure Club were the holders of the Cup for the year 1874, and of course had to defend it. We should have liked to have seen more entries for this race, and it is somewhat strange that the Canterbury Rowing Club, which, from the number of its members and the large fleet of beats at its disposal, may fairly claim to be called the premier club, did not put in an appearance, contenting itself with going for the junior fours and senior pairs. The three clubs for the senior fours would have made a fine race, and an additional entry added greatly to the interest felt in the result. For the junior fours there were four entries, the clubs represented being the U.R.C, H.R.C, Cure, and C.R.C. The junior pairs only produced a couple of entries—the Cure Club and the Heathcote; but the seniors showed well up, there being four entries. In the double sculls our northern friends, the H.R.C. and C.R.C. met. The pluck and spirit shown by the Cure Club in entering for so many eve its is to be commended, and it must not be forgotten that this club was the only one who went up to Welling on to uphold the honor of the province in the recent Interprovincial. The Canoe race, which by the way seems to be a very popular one, had four coloured on the card, Jones, in the Rip Rap, being the most fancied, though Bowron and Sweet had many admirers. We give below the results of the various events decided up to the time of our express leaving :

Pair Sculls and Cox, in stump outriggers ; one mile oval course; entrance, 10s. Prize—Messrs Coates and Co's Cup and Medals. Moa)Jones). C.R.C 1

Tui (Bowron), C.R.O 2 Una (Sibbald), H.R.O 3 A good start was effected, Jones in the Moa taking the water first, closely followed by Bowron, with Sibbald in close attendance. Off the island, the Moa led, with Tui close up, Una tailing off; coming down for home, Bowron spurted and obtained a slight lead, which, however, he only held for a short time, Jones, who had evidently been saving himself for the final effort, letting out when near home, and going away with a strong lead, which he maintained to the finish, winning by several lengths, Sibbald being hopelessly in the rear. Juhior Fours, under 20, with cox ; -two miles ; entrance, 20s. Prize—Cups or Medals. Heathcote, H.R.C 1 Cam, Cure R.C 2 Illyssus, C.R.O 3 Sabrina, U.R.O 4 The Heathcote boys had the call in the betting, a confidence which was justified by the result. The Ulyssus was the first to take the water, closely followed by the Heathcote, the Cam next. After first 100 yards had been gone in this order, the H. R. C. assumed a slight lead. All the boats being close up, all going eyes out. The H.RO. was first round the point by the Fishermen's Hut, C. R.C, second, and Kaiapoi third. At the red flag the Kaiapoi, Heathcote and Canterbury boats were all at it, and a splendid race ensued all down, the H.R.C. still leading and gradually drawing away. From this the first boat was not in doubt, the Heathcote boys having a s ronglead, and pulling well within themselver, The C.R.O. and Kaiapoi ma Je a good race for second place, which was ultimately secured by Kaiapoi, the H.R.C. coming well up at t the fiDi'sh.

Senior Fours, with coxswains. Distance two miles ; entrance, £l. Cam, Cure BC 1 Heathcote, H. 8.0 2 This race requires little description. The H. 8.0. was first away, and for the first quarter of a mile both boats were together. After this the Kaiapoi boat drew away and won easily. The Kaiapoi crew deserve every credit for their pluck in coming so far, and pulling such a good race.
