WAS HE MARRIED BEFORE.

( Calif'ornian Paper.} Jones was being married—fashionably married—in a San Francisco Church. A pale, nervous man, in rather shabby black, sat in one of the front pews, and watched the ceremony with the anxiety a rejected suitor might be disposed to display. He twitched his hands—the man in shabby black did—while the friends kissed the bride. As the bridegroom was about to give his arm to the blushing new partner, the pale gentleman stepped quickly up, and tapped Jones upon the shoulder. That successful Fortyniner thought of the Eaet and some other things, and became rather ghastly in appearance. • I wish to talk with you a moment, privately, sir,' said the stranger to the astonished bridegroom. ' I assure you, sir,' said Jones, struggling violently for selfposßession, • that—that—what in thunder do you come at such a time as this for ?' • A moment will suffice,' said the shabby gentleman, firmly. • Please step into this pew.' ' Well,' said Jones, in agony, while the large party that had gathered to witness the wedding stared, and wondered what truth there could be in those ugly rumors about the wealthy whilom bachelor. 'When a man gets married sir,' said the shabby gentleman, 'it is necessary for him to look with prudence upon the future, and he cannot begin too soon, Now, sir, a lot in the Underwriter Homestead Company, which I represent, would ' There was a chorus of female shrieks, and a general rush of gentlemen, as Jones, with a howl, seized the enterprising agent by the collar, and began kicking him down the aisle. Enterprise is a good thing, but Jones denies it.
